2009 Pegau CDP Reserve
Under the estate Domaine du Pegau label, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is spending a longer time in barrel and foudre than usual. Consequently, I tasted through three separate foudres, all of which looked spectacular. The final blend will probably be about 80% Grenache, 14% Syrah, 4% Mourvedre and 2% other varietals. The color is a dense black/ruby (one of the more opaque 2009s I saw), and the powerful nose offers up aromas of licorice, smoked herbs, charcuterie, bouquet garni, roasted meats, Peking duck, kirsch, blackberries and cassis. An enormous success, this cuvee has come on like gang busters since I tasted it last year, and may eclipse the stunning 2007. Given its tannin profile, the 2009 will require 5-6 years of cellaring and should keep for 30-35 years. Could this be a modern day version of Pegau's compelling 1989 Cuvee Reservee?

2009 Domaine de la Janasse CDP Cuvee Chaupin
One of my favorites was already the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin (which is always aged in foudres and 600-liter demi-muids, two-thirds in the former and one-third in the latter) and this wine has really put on richness and intensity since I tasted it last year. An absolutely magnificent wine, it scored a good four points higher this year, and it is unusual for me to vary that much from one tasting to the next. Tipping the scales at 15% natural alcohol, this dense purple wine has noble sweetness and an extraordinary concentration of lavender, black cherry liqueur, licorice, and minerality. Full-bodied, with silky tannins, a multi-dimensional, unctuously textured, voluptuous palate and a stunning finish, this wine is outrageously delicious and a phenomenal expression of old-vine Grenache. It should drink well for up to 20+ years.

2010 Segries Lirac Rouge Reserve

Pre Arrival Price (750): $16.99

2010 Grand Veneur Les Champauvins
The gorgeous 2010 Cotes du Rhone Les Champauvins possesses lots of kirsch, pepper and lavender notes, sweet tannin, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and good focus as well as length. It is fresher and livelier than the lovely 2009 recommended several issues ago.

Pre Arrival Price (750): $16.99
Score: 89-91

2010 Grand Veneur Lirac Clos de Sixte
Along with Domaine de la Mordoree, the Jaumes produce one of the finest wines of Lirac. The 2010 Clos de Sixte Lirac should compete with the brilliant 2009. Black currant, spring flower, licorice and crushed rock aromas jump from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied, beautifully pure, textured and dense Lirac. It should drink well for at least a decade.

Score: 90-92

2010 Grand Veneur CDP Rouge Les Origines
The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines is nearly off the charts in terms of concentration. It is a less sexy, flamboyant effort compared to the 2009, but it is noble, reserved and pure with plenty of black and blue fruit notes intermixed with subtle garrigue, graphite and spice box characteristics. Full and rich with high tannins, good acidity and a style built for the long term, this 2010 will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring, and keep for at least 20-25 years.

Pre Arrival Price (750): $54.99
Pre Arrival Price (Magnum): $114.99
Score: 94-96

2010 Mordoree CDP Reine des Bois
The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois should rival the estate's terrific 2007, 2006, 2005, 2001 and 1998. It boasts a saturated black/purple color and a glorious perfume of melted licorice, acacia flowers, lavender, blueberries, blackberries and kirsch. Full-bodied and dense as well as extraordinarily elegant, precise and fresh, this sumptuous wine should be cellared for 3-5 years, and drunk over the following 25+. It is a candidate for "wine of the vintage."

2010 Grand Veneur CDP Vieilles Vignes
Possessing compelling richness, the awesome, packed and stacked, inky purple-colored 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes possesses remarkable intensity of blackberry and blueberry fruit intertwined with camphor, lavender, licorice and truffle notes. Sensational richness and intensity make this one of the most concentrated, long-lived wines of the appellation.
