Some wine shops in NoVa have e-mail lists of their tastings, but they are not quite hip to the blog concept. I aggregate those e-mail messages here to make my life easier. Shops include The Curious Grape in Shirlington,VA and Wide World of Wine in DC. I am in no way affiliated with any of these businesses.

Mediterranean Seminar Series

RESERVE NOW FOR THIS TUESDAY'S FREE IN-STORE SEMINAR ON PROVENCE!
(Tue, Aug 4 at 6 & 7 pm)

affligem label

Quick:  Can you name France's oldest wine region?  Bordeaux?  Burgundy?  Would it surprise you if we said Provence?  Often overlooked in favor of France's big names, Provence has been making wine since the Greeks introduced vines to the area around Marseilles in 600 BC!  While other venerable regions quickly obtained France's prestigious AOC designation, much of Provence's vineyard area was considered vin de pays until late in the 20th century.  As a result, Provence isn't always considered a serious region, even though most of its vineyards are now Appellation Controllee and quality is generally very high.  So what kinds of wines do you find in Provence?  For one thing, world class rosé, always made in a dry style, that ranks as the best in the world!  Add to that full-bodied, aromatic whites made from unique Mediterranean grape varieties and full-bodied, earthy, spicy reds perfectly ripened in the scorching Mediterranean sun and you have a distinctive collection of wines as fragrant and evocative as the area's herbs de Provence.  Want to see what we mean?  Reserve now for Tuesday's FREE in-store seminar and enjoy a guided tasting of authentic, regional wines paired with specially-selected food pairings featuring the flavors of the Mediterranean.  The wines will be presented by Certified Wine Educator Suzanne McGrath who recently toured the region.  While the seminer is FREE, space is limited so reservations are required.  Just give us a call to register for the 6 pm or 7 pm session.  No email reservations please.  Can't make it Tuesday?  The seminar will be repeated on Saturday, August 8 at 1 pm.  Hope to see you there!

A Benchmark Supertuscan 94 Pts

A benchmark Supertuscan!

A 2004 Vintage

94 Points June 2008 Wine Advocate Vintage 2004

Father and son team Jurij and Vittorio Fiore make witness of much distinction at their small winery.  The property is located in the hills of Greve…. Their top wine is Il Carbonaione, a 100% Sangiovese (from the Lamole clone) aged predominantly in small French oak barrels which has a track record of aging very well, even in smaller vintages.  It bursts from the glass with layers of deeply spiced, mentholated fruit.  Sweet and expansive on the palate, this powerful, dense wine offers a superb balance.

Available for the pre-sale price of $630 per case

Cheers!

Hugo

VICTORY BEER TASTING TONIGHT!
(Mon, July 27, 6-8 pm)

Move over Colorado!  While some of America's top microbrews may formerly have come from western states like Colorado and California, the east coast is coming on strong these days and Pennsylvania seems to have emerged as one of the country's most prolific and creative states for brewing.  Arguably leading the way is Victory Brewing.  Founded in 1996 in an old Pepperidge Farm Bakery in Downington, Pennsylvania, Victory started as a restaurant and brewpub and has steadily grown to a regional powerhouse, producing a dozen and a half show-stopping beers.  Originally trained in Germany, Victory's brewmasters relish combining old world brewing traditions with new world creativity to produce unique, original beers.  Stop by the tasting bar TONIGHT, Monday, July 27 for a seasonal lineup featuring some of Victory's most popular brews, including:
  • Prima Pils, an unusually full-flavored lager, pumped up with German and Czech whole flower hops
  • Victory's summer seasonal weissbier, made in the unfiltered Bavarian style, using imported German malts and special yeasts that give it a fruity, citrusy tang
  • The robust Hop Wallop, an American double that's all hepped up with American whole flower hops
  • The deeply colored Hop Devil, a full-bodied, full-flavored American IPA with mind-blowing American hops deftly balanced with sweet, roasty German malts
  • and more!

The beers will be presented by Certified Specialist of Wine and resident beer geek Mike Eberly.  Plus, you'll enjoy special discounts on your favorite Victory beers!  Reservations are not required; just plan to stop by anytime from 6 to 8 pm.  Hope to see you there!

Ramey 50% off, Etude 33% off

2006 Ramey Syrah Rodger Creek      (92 pts)        Was: 59.99        Now: 29.99

The dense opaque purple-hued 2006 Syrah Rodger's Creek Vineyard offers aromas of melted chocolate, ground pepper, exotic peach and lychee nuts (5% Viognier is co-fermented), and an earthy, blackberry, smoky mid-palate as well as finish. Enjoy this superb Syrah over the next decade.                                                                                                      42 Bottles Available

2006 Ramey Syrah Shanel Vinyard   (93 pts)        Was: 59.99        Now: 29.99

Slightly better is the 2006 Syrah Shanel Vineyard. It includes 3% Viognier, but it is less noticeable at this stage. An opaque purple color is followed by enormous quantities of blackberries intermixed with tapenade, acacia flowers, and truffles. Full-bodied, meaty, and dense, it cuts an even broader mouthfeel than its sibling. It, too, can be drunk over the next decade.                                                                                                 41 Bottles Available

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2008 Etude Pinot Gris, Carneros  Not reviewed       Was: 29.99        Now: 19.99
This Etude Pinot Gris opens with inviting aromas of key lime, wet stone minerality, orange blossom and hints of white peach.  The pure flavors carry over on the palate and mingle with subtle cardamom and jasmine notes.  The wine is fresh with bright acidity and a richness that begs the next sip.  Hints of clove spice linger on the satisfying finish.  Unlike more delicate examples of Pinot Gris, Etude's rendition is a good companion for adventurous culinary explorations and for sipping by itself.
Cheers!
An Extraordinary Wine Saturday Tasting
Wide World of Wines has arranged a unique opportunity this Saturday!  Not only is this the first time we will be tasting Loire Valley wines that are perfect for this time of year, but as an added bonus we will be tasting Byron Kosuge Wines.  Jody Jackman, who has worked with Byron before, will be leading the tastings.
2008 Domaine Saupin Muscadet             Regular Price 11.99                Sale Price 9.99
A beautiful wine from Nantes with pale yellow color and a beautiful crisp taste with elegant minerality.    The rich and slightly creamy texture develops from the sur  lee aging.  The sometimes forgotten Muscadet can reward on the palate-lovely with shellfish or mild cheese or as a refreshing afternoon sipper.
2007 Chidaine Chenin Blanc                      Regular Price 13.99                        Sale Price 11.99
A fruity and full flavored wine with bright citrus and blossoms and the slightest perceived sweetness.  On the palate a creamy lemon and ginger blossom taste that balances the acidity to a smooth soft finish.  This is a lovely example of the structure, sweetness, and full flavor Chenin Blanc can produce.
2008 L'Aujardiniere Chardonnay              Regular Price 13.99                        Sale Price 11.99
A great chardonnay from the Loire.  This wine is fermented in cement and exhibits the purity of what this varietal can reflect.  A balanced wine with fruit, acidity and a pleasing saturation on the palate.  The fruit is sourced from Pays de Retz which is just west of Nantes, and captures the terroir-not quite crazy minerality but nuanced.
2007 Domaine Crochet Sancerre Rose      Regular Price 15.99                        Sale Price 13.99
A beautiful balance between fruit and structure-this wine defines subtlety.  The pinot is sourced from two holding and produced in the saignee method.  A great rose of pinot noir that has a creamy texture with pops of bright fruit that dance on the tongue, a very feminine styled wine but with ripeness and balance.  Sancerre Rose is the perfect accompaniment for the dog days of summer that await us!
Domaine Champalou Vouvray Petillant Brut   Regular Price 19.99  Sale Price 17.99
A very fresh and full flavored sparkler with elegant beads that burst with flavor.    The cuvee is balanced exhibiting minerality and a creamy orange blossom sweetness with the slightest dose of sweet herbals.  This is a wonderful expression of sparkling Chenin Blanc that is lively, clean and elegant with a soft plush finish.
B. Kosuge Wines
It's said that "terroir" is the nexus where soil, climate, vine, man—and woman—come together. While there's certainly no doubt that the grapes and where they're grown is important, it seems to me that the people—those who tend the vines, drive the tractors, whose vision led them to plant in some unlikely places, and most importantly those who embrace the hard work and devotion that is required to grow and make fine wine—tend to be forgotten. Certainly the best vineyards (I've been lucky enough over the years to work with several of them) are more than just great sites. They are farmed by talented and inspired people. While it usually starts with the owners, many of the people who have made the difference in the best vineyards never get their names on the labels. Among these growers, the ones I have the most respect for are those who never hesitate to roll up their sleeves and "do whatever needs to be done" to get it right. These are the vineyards, and the people, that I seek out for my own wines.
2006 Manchester Ridge, Mendocino Pinot Noir  Regular Price: 49.99    Pre-Arrival: 43.99
The pristine fruit from Mendocino yields wines with power, and then the gift of layers, lilting perfumed bouquet, integrated flavor, a soft touch with oak that rise and fall on the palate.  This pinot has great structure and flavor that easily rewards now but will surprise and tease with some aging.  The body is medium weight with soft tannins and a harmonious balance from a winemaker who loves to produce quality and let the fruit tell the story.
2007 Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir           Regular Price: 59.99                      Pre-Arrival: 52.99
A flavor laden pinot with wild berries and brown warm spice character.  The vineyard produces some top pinots and this bottling is no exception with rolling tastes on the tongue that consume with the first whiff and then upon swallow,  the wine expands and broadens on in the mouth and nose.  A luxurious and well crafted pinot that unravels well and needs many bottles to try and discover  the best time to drink because every time you taste you think, it can't get better…but it does.
2007 The Shop Pinot Noir                            Regular Price: 39.99                  Pre-Arrival: 34.99
Sophisticated, serious and delicious-this pinot is produced near the vineyard shop site, the Earth is nourished by the surrounding gardens nearby.  Low yield vines produce smaller berries that produce a wine that shows dark fruits with a warm savory edge is woven into a seamless sip by just the right amount of oak.   The aroma is concentrated and then wine has a lovely hangtime on the palate.
2006 Hudson Syrah, Carneros                    Regular Price: 49.99                   Pre-Arrival: 43.99
This famed vineyard struts its pedigree- a little closed at first sip but then bergamot, black ripe olives and lush spices fill the glass.  Dark and brooding, this serious wine jumps with bold flavors that result s from whole cluster pressing that adds to the finesse.  A deep rich wine that is not compromised by , but enhanced by oak.  Elegance is the key, because a wine with this much fruit can easily be overworked but not here, the wine is sexy, sultry and soft.
2006 Dry Stack Vineyard Bennett Valley Syrah, Sonoma County
                                                                                    Regular Price: 37.99    Pre-Arrival: 33.99
This syrah has decadent fruit and integrated spice with a warm roasted quality that evokes comfort.  A great balance between plush velvety fruit and fleshy tannins.  The aromas tease with sweetness and the taste is structured and then the wine falls on the palate with a rich body and a long silky finish.   As the flavors unravel in the glass the wine consumes the palate and releases the nectar with elegance and reserve.
Paraiso Pinot Noir
92-POINT CALIFORNIA PINOT FROM THE OUTSTANDING 2007 VINTAGE --JUST $24.99 WITH A SPECIAL EMAIL DISCOUNT
!
(Thur, July 23 through Sun, July 26 Only)
In today's market, you can find some incredible bargains even from top wine-making regions.  Case in point:  The 2007 Paraiso Pinot Noir from Santa Lucia Highlands, one of California's top growing regions, located in the cool hills of Monterey County.  Towering above Monterey, the Santa Lucia Mountains separate the interior Salinas Valley from the Pacific, at the same time creating rugged hillsides that enjoy warm morning temperatures moderated by cool ocean breezes and cloud cover -- perfect conditions for the slow ripening that produces complex Pinot Noir.  In impressive company, Paraiso (a name the Spanish first used in the area because it was like a little bit of heaven) rubs elbows with other top Pinot Noir vineyards like Pisoni, and farms 400 acres that create a patchwork of vineyard plots in the hills and canyons of the area.  Although Paraiso sells some of its grapes to other top wineries, the Smith family also bottles their own wine, blended from these various parcels and aged for 18 months in French oak, under the Paraiso label.  Especially in a great vintage like 2007 -- which some growers are calling California's best Pinot vintage in 30 years -- Paraiso's own wine offers incredible value.  It also just received 92 points from the Wine Spectator!
"Serves up a trim, flavorful band of ripe cherry, wild berry and strawberry jam that's elegantly styled and well-structured, finishing with a long, complex finish echoing anise and mineral. Drink now through 2014."
Lovely now, it's also a wine to sock away for enjoyment over the next few years.  While the wine just arrived, at just $27.99, it won't last long!  Want an even better deal?  From now through Sunday, July 26, just mention this email and pay just $24.99 a bottle!
If you would like to reserve any of this wine, just give us a call with a credit card number at 703-671-8700.  And don't forget to mention this email to receive your special discount!
The single vineyard Chateauneuf du Pape Mourre des Perdrix emerges from a vineyard in the northeastern sector of the appellation, just west of Courthezon. Maret's parcel includes 30-50 year old vines. The blend is 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre. The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Mourre des Perdrix possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as a gamy, earthy nose with plenty of black fruit, dried herb, tapenade, balsam wood, and sweet cherry/currant fruit aromas. This classy, complex 2000 marries power and elegance in a medium to full-bodied, pure style. Anticipated maturity: now-2014.
Michel Maret is one of the new stars of the southern Rhone. I am glad to see his wines properly represented in the United States.
JULY'S BEER OF THE MONTH
 weyerbacher double simcoe
WEYERBACHER BREWING COMPANY DOUBLE SIMCOE IPA
The surprise, runaway favorite in our recent IPA tasting, the Double Simcoe IPA is a must-try beer for all you Dogfish Head 90 Minute fans!  Weyerbacher's take on the Imperial IPA style uses Simcoe, a type of hop that was created, and even trademarked, in the pursuit of a hop that was high in acid and aromatics, but less harsh than other hop varieties. The result, judging from this 100% Simcoe beer, is a hop with less of a piney character and more of a delightfully bitter orange rind quality. This is a powerful brew with a mellow complexity and deep creamy texture. A solid streak of citrus and sour fruit are a nice counterpoint to the prevailing strong hop flavors. Weyerbacher is located about 60 miles north of Philadelphia in Easton, PA, a town with a long history of beer appreciation - it's home to a tavern visited by George Washington and Benjamin Franklin! Weyerbacher was established in 1995, and with over 25 different beers available throughout the year it seems there's no shortage of energy or creativity among the folks at this family-owned brewery.  Available in 12 oz. bottles and an unfiltered, bottle-conditioned 750 ml bottle.
Saturday Tastings: Piont Noirs at Everyday Prices
Saturday Tasting 1-4:
Pinot Noirs from the United States at Everyday Prices
2007 Siduri Sonma Coast This area, because of the cooler climate, leads to longer hang times and grapes that develop fully ripe flavors at significantly lower sugar levels.  The 2007 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a blend of 92% Sonatera Vineyard and 8% Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir. The wine was fermented with some stems which helped to create a more complex mélange of flavors. Despite this wine's lofty origins it is available at a very fair price. Regular Price $29.99        Sale Price $24.99
2007 Santa Rita HIlls The 2007 Siduri Sta. Rita Hills shows wonderful notes of rose petal, lilac, blackberry, and raspberry on the nose. The mouth is full, rich, and seamless, exhibiting a wonderful velvet-like texture and concentrated fruit flavors joined by vanilla and hints of dried herbs. The finish is persistent, dancing on a balance beam of fine tannins and acidity. No doubts that this wine will age well.                                         Regular Price $29.99         Sale Price $24.99
2007 Ponzi Tavola This perfumed nose shows spiced cherries and maple syrup leading to a perfectly balanced, sweet mid-palate of dark cherry and red plum. The finish is long and seamless.  Regular Price $29.99            Sale Price $24.99
2007 Four Graces Willamette Vally Earthy and elegant, fruit forward with smooth, expressive tannins, this wine bears all the hallmarks of a great New World Burgundy.  Reminiscent of blackberries, luscious damson, warm red roses, and wild mushrooms, the 2007 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is vibrant and delicious in its youth yet has the soft, focused tannins to suggest ageing with grace. Over 10 months in French oak has contributed a velvet softness to the mouthfeel without masking the lovely red to black fruit characteristics. The color is a deep, bright ruby with purple rays and the aromas are quintessential Oregon Pinot Noir.  Regular Price $29.99             Sale Price $24.99
Prices are good through 9/19/09
Saturday Tasting with Malena
New Arrivals with Malena
2008 Gotham Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon          Reg Price $13.99 Sale $11.29
Deep dense dark and brooding in color with a rim of purple/black in the glass.  The nose shows black fruits and loads of primary spices including fennel, lack pepper, some sweet vanilla oak is evident in its youth.  The palate is bold with good tannin grip and generous fruit weight.  The wine is big and rich, yet surprisingly elegant and a very long lasting after palate.
2008 Gotham McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon     Reg Price $13.99 Sale $11.29
Black as ink to look at and on the nose it screams blueberries, crème de cassis, and liquorice, cedar, and spice box.  The oak is dominated by the lavish, extravagant amounts of fruit and glycerin.  This intense, full bodied, surprisingly pure and elegant Cabernet should last at least a decade.  A meal on its own.
2008 Gotham McLaren Vale Merlot                                     Reg Price $13.99 Sale $11.29
The color is a brick red with bright lifted aromas showing heady floral scents with vanilla and chocolate box.  The palate is soft and delicate with pretty fruits of the forest and beautiful floral scents flow over onto the palate and a long mouth watering finish.  The after palate is succulent and leaves you wanting more.
2008 Stalking Horse Shiraz Adelaide Hills                            Reg Price $19.99 Sale $16.99
It is luminescent purple in color, very perfumed with hints of apple tree blossom on the nose and delicate spice; on the palate it has a purity of fruit and a lovely velvety texture.  Lost of up front fruit and flavor.
2006 JC Vizcarra                                                                   Reg Price $25.99 Sale 21.99
The 2006 J.C. Vizcarra was aged for 9 months in French and American oak. It delivers enthralling notes of cedar, bacon, wood smoke, mineral, and blueberry and blackberry. LOOKING FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL?
MANY TOP BRANDS ARE NOW AVAILABLE -- JUST ASK!
 Although most of the economic news in recent months has been gloomy, here's an interesting, upbeat tidbit:  Due to all the belt-tightening that's taken place this year, many, many of the biggest, most sought-after wine brands -- often reserved only for high-end restaurants -- are now available for the asking.  Often expensive, yes.  But if there's a big name that's been on your radar screen, now may be the time to splurge, while the wines are still available.
If you have something special in mind, just give us a call and we'll be happy to tell you we can get it.   703-671-8700.
