Some wine shops in NoVa have e-mail lists of their tastings, but they are not quite hip to the blog concept. I aggregate those e-mail messages here to make my life easier. Shops include The Curious Grape in Shirlington,VA and Wide World of Wine in DC. I am in no way affiliated with any of these businesses.

Surprising Wines From Gruet Of New Mexico Tonight (Thur 3/26)

The Curious Grape

STOP IN TONIGHT FOR EXCELLENT, SURPRISING WINES FROM GRUET OF NEW MEXICO (Wed, Mar 26, 6-8 pm)

Quick, which of America's wine regions has some of the highest-altitude vineyards in the country?
If you said New Mexico, it's probably just because you had a little hint.  If you don't think of New Mexico as prime grape-growing country, it's probably because you've never had the wines of Gruet.  Located in Albequerque, with vineyards at heights of some 4300 feet, Gruet was established by a French family with a long history as grape growers in France's Champagne region.  While traveling through the American southwest, they met a group of European winemakers who had successfully planted a vineyard in New Mexico and decided to follow suit, planting all Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the main grapes of Champagne.  Amazingly, the high altitude and cool nights (during which the temperature can drop a whopping 30 degrees) proved perfect for producing fruit with the high acidity necessary to making quality sparkling wine.  Today, 25 years later, Gruet is known as a consistently reliable - and affordable - producer of sparkling wine.  In fact, their wine is a favorite of the Obamas!
Stop by the tasting bar TONIGHT, Thursday, March 26 from 6 to 8 pm and get to know the full range of Gruet wines, including:
  • affordable sparkling wines made using the traditional method used in Champagne, ranging from dry to slightly sweet
  • a clean, pristine, non-sparkling white from Chardonnay
  • an earthy, non-sparkling Pinot Noir
  • a toasty, complex sparkler made by the family's winery in Champagne

The wines will be presented by Certified Specialist of Wine Dan Davenport, of the Curious Grape staff.  Plus, they'll be paired with a selection of French and American cheeses selected by Katie Park.  You'll also enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites!  Reservations are not required for this tasting; just plan to stop by any time from 6 to 8 pm.

2007 Pinot Noir Chehalem Mountains (wine makers notes)    Reg Price  $29.99  Sale Price  $24.79

The Chehalem Mountains Appellation is Oregon's newest Appellation established in 2006. This Appellation encompasses the area directly southwest of Portland and, as such, is probably the coolest part of the Willamette Valley. We choose to source fruit from this cooler area because it is so distinctly Oregonian – and so radically different from the fruit that we source from California. Specifically, the grapes from the Chehalem Mountains tend to ripen at lower sugars with higher levels of natural acidity. Fortunately, they also tend to show great physiological ripeness at these lower sugar levels and thus we are able to utilize some whole cluster fermentations with these wines. We believe this provides them with an additional level of complexity. Medium ruby color; deep, smoky, spicy aromas; ripe, rich cherry flavors with spice and some smoky oak; silky texture; good structure and balance; long finish. Deep and smoky flavors make this a perfect match for grilled meats. 280 cases made

2007 Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard  93pts                  Reg Price  $49.99  Sale Price  $41.99

Supple and engaging, with ripe, generous plum, black cherry, mineral, spice and subtle cedary oak nuances. This full-bodied Pinot possesses depth, concentration and complexity, with excellent balance and length. Drink now through 2015. 730 cases made.

2007 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard                                 Reg Price  $49.99  Sale Price  $41.99

No tasting notes available

2007 Pinot Noir Gary's Vineyard  94pts                      Reg Price  $49.99  Sale Price  $41.99

Intense and structured, supple and balanced, with full-bodied spice, wild berry and blackberry fruit that's focused and expansive, gaining depth and complexity and ending with a long, full, lingering finish. Drink now through 2015. 466 cases made.

2007 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard  92pts                        Reg Price  $59.99  Sale Price  $49.99

Offers broad flavors, mixing ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry fruit that's pure, rich and complex, turning elegant and supple. Full-bodied, this is long and persistent on the finish. Drink now through 2015. 437 cases made.

All tasting notes by the Wine Spectator unless otherwise indicated.

We will taste at least 6 of these wines including the Gary's and Hirsch Vineyards (if still available)

SURPRISING WINES FROM GRUET OF NEW MEXICO (Mar 26, 6-8 pm) --  Quick, which of America's wine regions has some of the highest-altitude vineyards in the country?  If you said New Mexico, it's probably just because you had a little hint.  If you don't think of New Mexico as prime grape-growing country, it's probably because you've never had the wines of Gruet.  Located in Albuquerque, with vineyards at heights of some 4300 feet, Gruet was established by a French family with a long history as grape growers in France's Champagne region. Today, 25 years later, Gruet is known as a consistently reliable -- and affordable -- producer of sparkling wine.  In fact, their wine is a favorite of the Obamas!  Stop by the tasting bar next Thursday, March 26 from 6 to 8 pm and get to know the full range of Gruet wines, including:
Reservations are not requ.ired for this tasting; just plan to stop by any time from 6 to 8 pm.

Rhones Other Than CDP

2005 Tardieu Laurent

Crozes Hermitage V.V.  92pts                   Suggested Retail  $32     Blow out price  $19.99
A lush, modern style, with an exotic display of mocha- and cocoa-tinged toast, followed by warm fig bread, molten chocolate, bramble and tar notes. The long finish has a nice buried iron streak. Drink now through 2012. 350 cases made.

St Joseph V.V.  93pts                                Suggested Retail  $37      Blow out price  $19.99
Frankly modern, but beautifully rendered, with mocha, fruitcake, black tea and chocolate notes backed by an ample core of raspberry, fig and black licorice. Yet not at all heavy, with a long, smoldering finish that lets the buried minerality peek in. Drink now through 2014. 450 cases made.

Gigondas V.V.  92pts                                 Suggested Retail  $39     Blow out price  $25.99
Ultramodern, with very suave mocha- and spice-filled toast leading the way for lush raspberry, boysenberry, licorice and graphite notes. The long finish lets the minerality blaze while still pumping out the fruit in spades. Drink now through 2013. 450 cases made.

Hermitage  94 pts                                       Suggested Retail  $100   Blow out price  $69.99
Very fleshy, with lots of dark cocoa, tar, black currant, truffle and licorice notes pumping through from start to finish. There's lots of grip, but this is well-rounded and fully integrated. Has a great encore of dark fruit and loam on the finish. Best from 2009 through 2023. 450 cases made.

White
Hermitage Blanc  94pts                             Suggested Retail  $60      Blow out price  $39.99
Gorgeous from start to finish, with fig, cardamom, quince paste, grilled hazelnut and allspice notes. A big, powerful style, this is richly textured, but deftly underpinned by fine acidity and a long, lingering note of Jonagold apple. Drink now through 2017. 300 cases made.

TOP ITALIAN WINES FROM VIETTI (Wed, Mar 18, 6-8 pm) -- Although many wineries do something well, it's rare to find a winery that seems to do everything well.  That's what makes Vietti, one of the premier wineries of Italy's famed Piedmont region, so exciting.  A winery that's been making wine for generations, Vietti produces acclaimed Barolo and Barbaresco, the pricey, prestigious wines of the region.  But even more exciting, Vietti applies the same exacting standards and skill to producing an outstanding array of affordable whites and reds from local grapes like Arneis, Dolcetto, and Barbera.  Mark your calendar now for a special FREE tasting featuring a full range of stand-out reds and whites from Vietti this Wednesday, March 18 from 6-8 pm.  You'll sample:

  • a plump, flavor-filled white made from Arneis ("ahr-NACE"), a grape popularized by Vietti
  • a purple, plummy, satisfying red with earthy overtones made from Dolcetto
  • a pair of highly-rated, juicy reds from Barbera
  • a lovely, affordable red made from Nebbiolo

Of course, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites, or mix up a case of wines from Vietti and take a special discount of 15% off!  Reservations are not required for this tasting.  Just stop by anytime from 6-8 pm.

EXCITING, OVERLOOKED ITALIANS (Sat, Mar 14, 1-4 pm) -- Although you may usually think of Tuscany and Piedmont when you think of Italian wine, in wine terms, Italy is a big country.  With twenty different regions, each of which makes wine, Italy is a remarkable country, with an incredible diversity of wine.  So if you tend to reach for Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese when you drink Italian, you're just barely scratching the surface.  Dig a little deeper, and you'll find an incredible array of local reds and whites that deliver the kind of unique character and style that make wine drinking so much fun.  More importantly, just as in Spain and Portugal, Italy has made tremendous strides in improving quality in recent years.  So lesser-known areas that formerly produced rustic wines for local consumption are now turning out impressive, modern wines that are well worth exploring.  Want to see what we mean?  Stop by the tasting bar this Saturday, March 14, from 1 to 4 pm and sample a diverse selection of lesser-known, but extremely well-made wines, including:

  • an aromatic, bargain-priced white that you can afford to drink every day, with freshness and character that beats most Pinot Grigio
  • a suprisingly modern, deeply fruity blend of local Montepulciano and Cabernet Sauvignon from Le Marche on Italy's rugged Adriatic coast
  • a grapey, chocolatey, berry-filled Ripasso-style red from the area where they make Valpolicella
  • a soft, silky, affordable Sangiovese made from younger vines in the high rent district that produces Brunello di Montalcino

While we're at it, we'll also sample an extremely rare Nebbiolo made from 90-year-old vines, which just might surprise you!  Of course, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites!  Or mix up a case of the featured wines and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!

SIMPLE SAUTEED ASPARAGUS SAYS "HELLO SPRING"  -- While the threat of snow may make it feel as though winter still has us in its grip, the peeking crocuses and budding trees clearly signal that spring is on the way!  And nothing says spring on your dinner table like asparagus.  Whether you're in the mood to welcome the season or already planning your Easter meal, you're sure to enjoy this simple preparation, jazzed up with an eclectic combination of tangy, mouth-watering artisanal goat cheese and Asian-inspired vinegar flavored with yuzu (a tangy citrus fruit), both available at The Curious Grape!  Just look for Katie's special display to pick up everything you need to prepare this week's wine and food pairing.

Asparagus with Yuzu Rice Vinegar &
Sautéed Goat Cheese Rounds

1 bunch fresh asparagus, cleaned and trimmed into 2-inch pieces
1 medium shallot, minced
2 tablespoons butter, halved
2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil, halved
Salt & Pepper
2 tablespoons white wine
2 tablespoons Yuzu Rice Wine Vinegar
3 oz. Vermont Butter and Cheese Fresh Chevre Log
3 tablespoons Panko or Italian bread crumbs

Melt half of the butter and olive oil over medium-high heat in a sauté pan that has a lid.  Add shallots and sauté for 1-2 minutes until they begin to soften.  Next, add the fresh asparagus to the pan and season with salt and pepper.  Cover and cook for 3 minutes.  Add the wine and toss with asparagus.  Re-cover and cook for 3 more minutes or until asparagus is tender but still firm.

While the asparagus is cooking, cut the goat cheese into 4 equal wheels (a piece of dental floss is ideal for cutting the goat cheese into neat rounds without crushing or breaking it!).  Coat each slice well with bread crumbs.  Melt the rest of the butter with the olive oil in a small sauté pan over medium-high heat.  Add the breaded goat cheese rounds and cook until crispy and browned on each side, 1-2 minutes.

Divide the asparagus among four plates, top each serving with a goat cheese wheel and drizzle with the Yuzu Rice Wine Vinegar!

Makes 4 servings

Wine pairing suggestion:  2007 Columbia Winery Gewurztraminer from Washington State. Our new favorite Gewurztraminer, this Washington white is exotic but approachable, with subtle floral and spice notes that add interest but don't overwhelm.  The slight sweetness creates a terrific counterpoint with the tanginess of the goat cheese and yuzu vinegar.  89 Points, Wine Spectator.  $13.99

Powerhouse Pinot Noir Wed & Aussie Values Thur

STOP IN THIS WEEK FOR BIG NAME CALIFORNIA PINOT NOIRS WED (Mar 11, 6-8 pm) & STELLAR AUSTRALIAN WINE VALUES THURSDAY!

BIG NAME CALIFORNIA PINOT NOIR THIS WEDNESDAY (Mar 11, 6-8 pm) --  Love Pinot Noir?  If so, you'll be thrilled to know that the word on the street is that the 2007 vintage in California was one of the best vintages for Pinot Noir in years and the wines from this vintage are just beginning to arrive!  Want to see for yourself what all the fuss is about?  Stop by the tasting bar THIS Wednesday, March 11 from 6-8 pm for a special tasting of California Pinot Noir from boutique producers like Siduri, A.P. Vin, and W.H. Smith.  We've rounded up some highly-rated heavy-hitters, as well as some of the best values we can find for Pinot of this caliber.  The tasting begins with a gorgeous, 90-Point Viognier from the 2007 vintage (just to wet your whistle), then changes gears for some serious Pinot, including:

  • A super value Sonoma Coast Pinot from W.H. Smith
  • A 90-Point Siduri Pinot with concentrated flavors of berries and spice
  • A 93-Point powerhouse from Pinot specialist A.P. Vin

While we're at it, we couldn't resist including the silky, voluptuous 92-Point Goldeneye Pinot from the 2005 vintage, which turned out to be our favorite in a recent tasting!  The wines will be presented by Certified Specialist of Wine Mimi Naab from the Curious Grape staff.  This early tasting may be your only chance to get in on some of the highest-rated wines of the vintage!  And of course, you'll have the chance to purchase your favorites at the tasting bar discount.  Even better:  Mix up a case of the wines being tasted and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!  Reservations are not required for this tasting; just stop by anytime from 6 to 8 pm.  Hope to see you there!

  • a lovely, soft, aromatic Gewurztraminer from Alto Adige
  • a classic local red from Emilia-Romagna that may surprise you
  • everything you could want in a juicy, splashy Dolcetto from Piedmont
  • a rich, complex, Ripasso-style wine from Veneto

Of course, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites!  Better yet, why not mix up a case of the featured wines and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!

HOT TIP!

Looking for a way to stretch your wine dollar for maximum enjoyment in this dreary economy?  What could be better than a 90-Point wine for just $10.99?!  Talk about a deal, the 2008 Maipe Malbec from Argentina has just arrived.  The Maipe ("MY-pay") line of wines is made by Chakana, a winery that was established in 2001.  A local winery with a serious mission, Chakana creates an outstanding array of wines in Lujan de Cuyo, a top sub-zone of Mendoza.  The wines are made under the direction of Italian winemaker Alberto Antonini, better known for making the wines at Altos Las Hormigas.

"The 2008 Malbec is a glass-coating purple color with a striking perfume of violets, black cherry, and black raspberry. Exhibiting surprising complexity for its price category, the wine has gobs of fruit, savory flavors, and excellent depth and length. It is an outstanding value for drinking over the next 3-4 years. Alberto Antonini (think Altos Las Hormigas) is a consultant at Maipe which in and of itself is an indicator that the winery is focused on quality."  90 Points, Wine Advocate

Seldom does a wine in this price range receive such accolades.  However, as everywhere, the quality of wine in Argentina continues to improve.  Unlike everywhere else, production costs remail low, making this a deal that's too good to pass up.  Want to save even more?  Just mention this email to receive a special discount of 20% off 12 bottles or more!  The only caveat:  Quantities are limited.  If you would like to reserve some of this wine, give us a call with a credit card number at 703-671-8700.

The Post's Best Bordeaux Values Tonight (Mar 5)

DON'T MISS TONIGHT'S FREE TASTING OF "CAN'T MISS" BORDEAUX VALUES RECOMMENDED BY THE WASHINGTON POST(Thur, Mar 5, 6-8 pm)!

Did you happen to catch last Wednesday's wine column in the Washington Post?  In case you missed it, the columnist's advice was basically to run, not walk, in order to get in on some of the great value Bordeaux still around from the 2005 vintage:

"I decided to test the market for good-value Bordeaux by seeking out 2005 reds that retail for $20 or less.  My conclusion: You can't go wrong. ... Bordeaux can be intimidating, with its dicey futures market and wild price swings on top wines from vintage to vintage or month to month.  But in the under-$20 range, we don't have to worry about the drama.  We just need to worry about availability, because these gems from 2005 will not be around much longer. If you haven't tried them, now's the time."  Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post

But as we'd said before, what's the fun of reading and not tasting?  If you want to give some of the featured wines a spin, stop by the tasting bar TONIGHT, March 5 from 6 to 8 pm.  We'll be sampling some of the columnn's most highly-recommended selections, including:

  • Chateau de Francs ("stylish, with a velvety texture and good tannin structure over full cherry and blackberry flavor")
  • Chateau le Doyenne ("shows textbook Bordeaux flavors of blackberry, plum and graphite")
  • Chateau Prignac ("Cabernet sauvignon gives this wine a blackberry-black cherry character, which is accentuated by anise and a good balance and impressive finish")

Of course, in addition to tasting, you'll also enjoy the tasting bar discount off all your favorites!  Or mix up a case of the wines being tasted and take a special discount of 15% off!  Reservations for this tasting are not required; just stop by anytime from 6 to 8 pm.

2006 Noon Eclipse                                                             97 pts   Regular Price $79.99

The 2006 Eclipse is a blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Shiraz, sourced from 60- to 80-year-old vines in McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. The wine spent 18 months in small and large French and American oak. Dark ruby colored, it offers a fragrant, already complex bouquet of violets, mineral, Asian spices, leather, black cherry, and blueberry. Remarkably elegant and impeccably balanced, on the palate notes of garrigue, licorice, and kirsch emerge leading into a 60+-second finish. It can be enjoyed now but for optimum pleasure, give it another five years of cellaring and drink it through 2026. Wine Advocate

2006 Glaetzer Anaperenna Shiraz/Cabernet              94-97pts   Regular Price $45.99

The 2006 Shiraz (75%) – Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) "Anaperenna" is the wine formerly known as Godolphin, the change resulting from a trademark dispute. It was aged for 15 months in new French and American oak. Opaque purple, it offers a sensational bouquet of pain grille, scorched earth, meat, game, blueberry, and black currants. This is followed by a surprisingly elegant yet powerful, structured wine with gobs of spicy fruit, ripe tannins, and a plush texture. The long, 60-second finish is succulent and sweet. Give this classy wine 4-6 years in the cellar and enjoy it through 2030. Hats off to Ben Glaetzer for producing an extraordinary portfolio! Wine Advocate

The opaque purple-colored 2007 Blue-Eyed Boy Shiraz spent 12 months in 80% new American oak. It offers up an enticing nose of cedar, tobacco, mineral, blueberry, and black raspberry. Opulent on the palate, this glossy effort will evolve for another 1-2 years but can be enjoyed now and over the next decade. Wine Advocate

2006 Ramey Chardonnay Russian River                    88 pts   Regular Price $37.99

2007 Silverado Napa Chardonnay                                               Regular Price $24.99

Pale yellow color. Abundant fruit aromas of sweet yellow apple, honeydew melon and ripe citrus. Floral notes highlight the nose while aromas of vanilla and oak stay in the background. On the palate, light and refreshing—even sprightly! Lingering flavors on the finish tempt you back for another sip. Winemakers tasting notes
