WHAT'S OLD IS NEW: "OLD WORLD" WINES THAT DELIVER "NEW WORLD" FLAVOR TONIGHT! (Fri, May 15, 6-8 pm) With new wines rolling in with the spring season, Cheryl's found a number of new favorites! What do these wines have in common? Big flavor! As vineyard managers all over the world learn to coax riper fruit with more intense flavors from their vines -- even in climates that have traditionally been considered relatively cool -- some "old world" wines are starting to show up with some surprisingly "new world" flavors. Want to see what we mean? Pop by the tasting bar TONIGHT, Friday, May 15 from 6 to 8 pm and check out Cheryl's bold new lineup from France and Italy, including: - A surpisingly successful Sancerre from the cool 2008 vintage, with intense flavors of lime curd and a silky, generous texture
- A round, ripe, full-flavored white from Italy that will blow your usual Pinot Grigio away
- One of the season's winning rosés from southern France, deep pink in color, and packed with flavors of candied cherry
- An eye-opening version of the usually diminutive Barbera from northwest Italy -- so deep purple and rich, you'll be serving it at backyard barbecues!
As usual, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites. Or mix up a case of the wines being tasted and take a special discount of 15% off! THE WEEK'S MOST EXCITING NEW ARRIVALS SATURDAY (May 16, 1-4 pm) The spring season always brings a boatload of new arrivals. Planning to be out and about this Saturday? Why not stop by and check out some of the most exciting wines we've found this season, including: - A knockout rosé of Pinot Noir from Oregon that has everything we're looking for: great color, great flavor, and a mouthwatering texture, all at an affordable price!
- A gorgeous, dry, aromatic Muscat from Spain, with lovely floral aromas and delicate peach-like flavor
- An incredible Gran Reserva Malbec from one of our most popular Argentine producers that you have to taste to believe: Easily a $20 wine, this sells for less than $15! This is one wine that you don't want to miss!
As usual, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on the wines being tasted, or mix up a case of the featured wines and enjoy a special discount of 15% off! | | Wine 101 Seminar at Signature Theatre | | RESERVE NOW FOR WINE PART 2 OF OUR WINE 101 SEMINAR AT SIGNATURE THEATRE THIS MONDAY! (May 18, 6:30 pm) If you missed Part 1 of our Wine 101 seminar last week, you missed a fascinating, eye-opening look at the key elements that make wine tick! Still, it's not too late to learn the basics of wine! Sign up now for Part 2 of the series this Monday, May 18 at 6:30 pm. Reviewing the basics covered in last week's session, Part 2 moves on to an in-depth explanation of grape variteties, with a focus on where important grapes are grown, their basic characteristics, what to expect with each, how to serve, and how they compare with one another. The session explores "international" varieties like Pinot Gris, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as "native" grapes like Nebbiolo and Torrontes. You'll experience an illuminating, guided tasting in which each wine is paired with an hors d'ouevre-sized food pairing that brings out its key characteristics. You'll also receive our informative Wine 101 materials, all packed with information that you'll refer to again and again! Plus, you'll also enjoy special discounts on the wines featured in the seminar! The cost of the seminar is just $39, all inclusive. (Wed, May 20, 6-8 pm) If you happened to catch our discussion of the tricky 2008 vintage in last week's email, you already know that, due to the vagaries of weather, being aware of vintage differences can make the difference between ferreting out the best wines vs. being stuck with a loser. If you love Pinot Noir, here's what you need to know: The wines to buy right now are 2007 Pinots from California and 2006 Pinots from Oregon. Why? The word on the street and in the press is that the 2007 vintage is one of the best years ever for California Pinot Noir. How about in Oregon? Not so much. However, 2006 was an impressive Oregon vintage, producing plenty of plush examples, many of which are fortunately still around. So while the 2007s from California are just beginning to roll in, and you can still get your hands on some '06 gems from Oregon, now's the time to taste and buy the best of what's available. Want to see what we mean? Plan to stop by the tasting bar this Wednesday, May 20 from 6 to 8 pm for a special tasting of the Pinot Noirs that should be on your radar screen right now, including top boutique brands like Loring and A.P. Vin from top vineyards like Rosella's. In addition to tasting, you'll also enjoy the tasting bar discount on your favorite wines, as well as the opportunity to mix up a case of world class Pinot at a 15% discount! Reservations are not required for this tasting; just plan to stop by anytime from 6 to 8 pm. Don't miss it!

Don't Wait: Sale ends THIS Sunday, May 17th! | | KATIE'S TIP: CHECK OUT TCHO CHOCOLATE! | | Want to be bad while still feeling good? TCHO's "green", fair-trade chocolate is the way to go! While we've always carried excellent organic chocolate brands (like Dagoba), our new favorite organic chocolate is a cut above, revolutionary, even! Made in a huge new facility on San Francisco's waterfront, TCHO chocolate takes the whole concept of "single origin" chocolate to a new level, focusing on flavor. What's the idea behind segregating cacao beans that come from different places and making them into separate "single origin" bars? The premise is that the cacao from different places tastes different. Focusing on this premise, TCHO produces a line of bars from regions all over the world labeled not with the regional name, but with the key flavor component of that place's chocolate: nutty, fruity, chocolatey, or citrus. The Citrus bar, for example, is made entirely from clean, tangy beans grown on a certified organic plantation in Madagascar. Not just a clever gimic, the whole concept is beautifully executed to deliver intense blasts of focused, sophisticated flavors and creamy chocolate texture in every bar! Want to check it out? Pick up a bar ($4.49) today! Or, better yet, pick up an 8-Piece flavor sampler ($8.99)that allows you to taste and compare! | | MAY'S BEER OF THE MONTH | | BEAR REPUBLIC RACER 5 IPA! Want to take it for a spin? Mark your calendar now for Mike's IPA tasting Wednesday, May 27 from 6-8 pm! From the heart of California wine country, the Racer 5 IPA brings a distinctive "Blue Collar" touch to Sonoma County. Brewed by a part-time firefighter, race car driver and instructor, and former Army combat engineer, this is Bear Republic's statement brew on the hoppy IPA style. And what a statement it is! The Racer 5 is a perfect match for burgers off your grill or your favorite wings or fries. With its snap of piney hops followed by a touch of citrus on the finish, it's a gloriously bitter, bottle-conditioned ale with a subdued maltiness throughout, which keeps it nicely balanced. Bear Republic was founded by third- and fourth-generation Sonoma County residents and continues to be a family owned and operated affair, recently expanding from their brewpub in downtown Healdsburg to a larger brewing facility nearby - all the better to satisfy all of us thirsty East-Coasters! If you're a fan of IPAs, you'll love the Racer 5! Great American Beer Festival: Gold Medal Winner Beer Advocate: A- Ratebeer.com: 98 Available in 6-packs | | |
