Some wine shops in NoVa have e-mail lists of their tastings, but they are not quite hip to the blog concept. I aggregate those e-mail messages here to make my life easier. Shops include The Curious Grape in Shirlington,VA and Wide World of Wine in DC. I am in no way affiliated with any of these businesses.

Gaja

Gaja

Angelo Gaja, owner and president of the Gaja Winery, is a fourth-generation Piedmontese winemaker. Internationally acknowledged as one of Italy's and the world's greatest winemakers, Angelo Gaja has been responsible for bold innovations in the vineyards and the cellars. Among his innovations in Piedmontese winemaking are the use of barriques (225-liter French oak barrels) for aging wines and his plantings of the region's first Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard of the 20th century as well as its first Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc vineyards.

Angelo Gaja is known for producing elegant, opulent wines that are true to their origins. He is a pioneer in the production of single-vineyard wines in Piedmont. The quality of his wines is such that they have been described by Wine Spectator, a leading consumer wine publication, as "perhaps the finest Italian wines ever made."

Born in Alba in 1940, Angelo attended the highly respected Enological Institute of Alba, from which he graduated in 1960 with a degree in enology. He also holds a master's degree in economics from the University of Torino.

2005 Costa Russi This vineyard lies a few steps from Sori Tildin. Purchased by the Gaja family in 1967, it derives its name from the term "costa," the side of the hill that faces the sun, and "Russi," the nickname of the former owner. Dark ruby/purple. A captivating and refined nose with well-integrated aromas of blackberries, violets and roasted coffee beans. Elegance and crystal purity characterize this extremely complex and densely woven wine with an aging potential of decades.

2005 Sori Tilden The Sorì Tildìn vineyard was acquired by the Gaja family in 1967. It was first produced as a single-vineyard wine in 1970. The word "sorì" is the Piedmontese word for a hilltop with a southern exposure. "Tildìn" was the nickname of Angelo Gaja's grandmother, Clotilde Rey. Deep purple Complex aromas of toast, minerals, sour cherries, cedar and spices Displays the roundest tasting profile of all Gaja single-vineyard wines. The rich body, subtle texture and fine, ripe tannins are typical for this wine of great finesse, the quintessential expression of the land and the Nebbiolo grape. This wine has extraordinary aging potential--more than forty years in outstanding vintages.

2005 Sori San Lorenzo In 1964, the Gaja family purchased this vineyard from the parish of Alba and named it after San Lorenzo, the patron saint of Alba's cathedral. "Sori" means hilltop with southern exposure. Deep red. Highly concentrated currant and black cherry fruit with a hint of coffee, in addition to aromas of fine herbs, minerals and exotic spices. Almost always the most powerful and austere of Gaja's five single-vineyard wines, requiring a longer time to fully develop. A very focused, concentrated wine with a long, lingering finish and refined tannins, it has excellent aging potential.

This is what will be arriving at the end of the week…

Ramey Wines

Ramey Wines

A select group of winemakers can be credited with revolutionizing modern day winemaking in California. They are the innovators who, some 20 years ago, brought Old World traditions back to a New World that had thrown in its lot with university scientists to make squeaky clean wines largely devoid of character. The goal of these new wave winemakers was to put terroir back into the bottle and create wines of unique distinction.

David Ramey is widely acknowledged to be among the wine pioneers whose efforts helped raise the bar for all American winemakers and brought California to the forefront of the international wine world. David's groundbreaking work with indigenous yeasts and malolactic and barrel fermentation yielded a new California style that was richer, more lush and silky smooth than previously known. As a result, he created a benchmark style now emulated by many.

The Ramey winery produces authentic, hand-crafted wines made in an Old World tradition--coupled with New World innovation and California terroir. Owned exclusively by David and his wife Carla, grapes are sourced from vineyards with which David has worked for many years.

2006 Carneros District Chardonnay This year's blend comes 37% from the Sangiacomo Tallgrass vineyard; 27% from Sangiacomo Green Acres, a young Wente selection (both in Sonoma); 23% from Larry Hyde's own Bayview Vineyard (this is his personal vineyard and not the Hyde Vineyard, but also in Napa); and 13% from Wells Wagner's twenty-five-year-old Wente vineyard in Bennett Valley, north of Carneros. The heavier, clay-based soils of Carneros produce wines with a broad, full mouthfeel.

2006 Russian River Valley Chardonnay At 74%, this vintage derives primarily from five different Dutton ranches, together with 15% from Rochioli Vineyards, 6% from the Heintz Ranch near Occidental and 5% from Green Pastures Vineyard (a 38-year-old Wente vineyard back Felta Creek Road). Goldridge loam and gravelly soils give a crisper mouthfeel to Russian River Chardonnays compared with their Carneros counterparts.

2006 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay Our fourth release from this vineyard planted in 1999 by Richard Hyde and his son Rick, brother and nephew of Larry Hyde. Named Sonoma Stage, it is at the apex of Stage Gulch Road between Petaluma and Carneros—a quite cool and windy site. This year, however, we've included the first harvest off the Platt Vineyard as 23% of the blend. Planted to our specifications, with old Wente selected from Larry Hyde's vineyard, the Platt Vineyard sits 800 feet above the village of Bodega, with a south-facing exposition overlooking the Estero Americano.

2005 Ramey Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard A stunning effort, the 2005 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard boasts great intensity along with huge tropical fruit notes interwoven with notions of spring flowers, orange marmalade, white peaches, and steely minerals. Its abundant fruit conceals any evidence of wood. Well-delineated, with outstanding acidity as well as a layered, sumptuous finish, it should age nicely for 4-5 years, possibly longer. 95WA

2005 Ramey Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard Offering copious amounts of orange marmalade, smoky hazelnuts, and tropical fruits, the full-bodied, rich 2005 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard is on a faster evolutionary track than the Hyde Vineyard. Drink the Hudson cuvee over the next 2-3 years. 94WA

2005 Ramey Claret, Napa Valley  Deep red. Elegant, sharply focused currant aromas show bright mineral lift. Sweet and juicy, with supple tannins and fresh red berry flavors given support by firm acidity. This has Old World spice and tannin structure, finishing on a bright red fruit note. 90-91 Tanzer

2005 Ramey Cabernet, Napa Valley  Inky violet. Powerful tobacco-accented blackberry and cassis aromas, with a gentle mocha note and a hint of iron. The supple dark berry flavors are supported by low-key minerality and gentle tannins. Gains sweetness on the finish, which shows a distinct blueberry note. This is the first vintage for this bottling, which is made from all hillside vines, according to Ramey. 90-92 Tanzer

2005 Ramey Pedregal Proprietary Red Readers looking for a Screaming Eagle look-alike should check out David Ramey's 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal (85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot), a wine that has put on amazing richness and intensity since last year. Beautifully pure creme de cassis fruit interwoven with notions of spring flowers, espresso roast, and truffles jump from the glass of this wine. Wonderfully sweet, expansive fruit flavors, a massive, full-bodied palate, and superb elegance as well as purity suggest this stunner should drink well for 20-25+ years. 96WA

Special Tastings Tonight & Friday (Aug 21 & 22)

DON'T MISS TONIGHT'S TASTING OF IMPRESSIVE, AFFORDABLE WINES FROM CALIFORNIA (Thur, Aug 21, 6-8 pm) & FRIDAY'S LAST SPLASH OF SUMMER!

A TASTE OF PASO ROBLES TONIGHT (Thur, Aug 21, 6-8 pm) -- Traveling in Napa this week, we're in a California state of mind, so it's not surprising that tonight's special tasting features an all-new lineup of California wines!   Not from Napa, tonight's event features the wines of Robert Hall, a meticulous, family-owned winery located in Paso Robles.  Why Paso Robles?  After traveling in France's Rhone region some 40 years ago, Robert Hall dreamed of establishing his own winery and working with the great grapes of the Rhone Valley.  After an exhaustive exploration of regions throughout California, Hall finally settled on Paso Robles, a unique, ideal location for grape-growing, located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, in California's Central Coast.  If you haven't heard much about Paso Robles, you will!  California's fastest-growing and largest geographic appellation, Paso Robles offers ideal conditions, including warm, dry days that allow growers to achieve perfect ripeness, as well as California's largest swings between daytime and nighttime temperatures.  The cool evenings have the effect not only of preserving acidity that gives the wines a sense of freshness despite their ripe, concentrated flavors, it also slows down and draws out the growing season, which is what maximizes complexity in the fruit.  Recognized as a dream location by Robert Hall, the area excels not just in the Rhone varieties that he longed to work with, but also in Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and more!  Want to experience a taste of Paso?  Stop by the tasting bar TONIGHT and sample a full range of Hall's lineup, including:

  • an impressive Sauvignon Blanc made in the style of white Bordeaux, with soft, melony fruit and subtle oak aging that gives it a round, vanilla-tinged flavor
  • Hall's "Rhone de Robles", a lush, spicy blend of Syrah, Grenache, and other Rhone varieties, made from vines that originally came from Chateauneuf du Pape's famous Chateau Beaucastel
  • a classic Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, with ripe, generous fruit flavors and a silky texture
  • a gorgeous Syrah that marries the best of California's lush ripe, blackberry flavors with France's notes of earth and saddle leather

Not only delicious, best of all, the wines are all universally affordable, making them excellent values!  The wines will be paired with a lineup of some of California's most exciting artisanal cheeses.  Plus, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorite wines.  Even better: mix up a case of the wines being tasted and take a special discount of 15% off!   Hope to see you there!

**THE LAST SPLASH OF SUMMER**(Fri, Aug 22, 6-8 pm) -- With the (early) Labor Day weekend just around the corner, it's time to revel in some serious summer fun before the summer fades into the busy fall season!  Stop by the tasting bar THIS Friday for Cheryl's Last Splash of Summer, a celebration of summer's quintessential sips:  light, splashy whites, crisp, refreshing rosé, and bold, spicy red for grilling.  You'll sample:

  • a fresh, aromatic Vinho Verde from Portugal, a summer classic, with zesty fruit flavors and a festive hint of spritz
  • our most popular California Sauvignon Blanc, with juicy flavors of grapefruit and lime
  • a spicy, classic rosé from France's Rhone Valley, that's like summer in a glass, with flavors of ripe strawberry and tangy watermelon
  • a 90-Point Argentine Malbec that's just about the best partner for late summer barbeques

As always, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorite wines.  Or why not mix up a case of the wines being tasted for a Labor Day weekend celebration and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!

Look what $29.99 buys...

Correction Massena Moonlight Run

is not 2005 but the 2003 vintage.

2003 Massena Moonlight Run   Regular Price $39.99  WA 93pts

The terrific 2003 The Moonlight Run is a blend of 62% Grenache (from 120-year-old vines), 15% Shiraz (from 45-year-old vines), 15% Cinsault and 8% Mourvedre (both from 80-year-old vines) aged in old French hogsheads for 19 months. Exhibiting an Australian Chateauneuf du Pape-like character, its deep plum ruby hue is accompanied by glorious scents of raspberry jam, blueberries, Provencal herbs, pepper, and spice box. With exceptional ripeness, richness, and depth as well as a savory, expansive, smooth mouthfeel, this is a knock-out Australian red to drink over the next 5-6 years.

2005 La Bienfaisance   Regular Price $39.99  WA 92 pts

A stunning effort from this property in St.-Christophe des Bardes, this 25-acre vineyard is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Made in a flamboyant style for the vintage, it reveals a dense purple color along with an expressive, ostentatious nose of sweet cherry liqueur intermixed with creme de cassis, toast, spring flowers, incense, melted licorice, and chocolate. Full-bodied with high but sweet, velvety tannins, it is already approachable, but promises to develop more nuances over the next decade. It should last for 20+ years. Kudos to the proprietor and his wine consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt.

2001 Paul Autard Cote Ronde Chateauneuf du Pape   Regular Price $49.99  WA 91pts

Most of the structure, tannin, and backwardness appears to have found its way into the top cuvee, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape La Cote Ronde. A deep ruby color is followed by aromas of spicy new oak, herbes de Provence, earth, pepper, and kirsch liqueur. Pinot Noir-like in the mouth, with moderate tannin in the finish, it will be at its finest between 2005-2013.

2005 Massena Moonlight Run   Regular Price $39.99  WA 93pts

The terrific 2003 The Moonlight Run is a blend of 62% Grenache (from 120-year-old vines), 15% Shiraz (from 45-year-old vines), 15% Cinsault and 8% Mourvedre (both from 80-year-old vines) aged in old French hogsheads for 19 months. With exceptional ripeness, richness, and depth as well as a savory, expansive, smooth mouthfeel, this is a knock-out Australian red to drink over the next 5-6 years.

2001 Charbonniere Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Mourre des Pedrix   Regular Price $49.99  WA 92 pts

A noble Chateauneuf du Pape with a grand cru Burgundy-like aromatic display, the 2001 Mourre des Perdrix possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose that reminded me of a Flagey-Echezeaux. Aromas of raspberries, acacia flowers, and blackberries are followed by a southern Rhone-styled wine possessing large volume as well as a chewy texture. However, there is tremendous elegance and finesse in this full-bodied, precise, fresh, deep, rich, concentrated 2001. Drink this beauty over the next 12-14 years. For statisticians, it comes from a lieu-dit in the northeastern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape, just west of the village of Courthezon. Made from 30-50 year old vines, it is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre.
