Some wine shops in NoVa have e-mail lists of their tastings, but they are not quite hip to the blog concept. I aggregate those e-mail messages here to make my life easier. Shops include The Curious Grape in Shirlington,VA and Wide World of Wine in DC. I am in no way affiliated with any of these businesses.

**CHERYL'S AUSTRALIAN FAVORITES** (Thur, July 31, 6-8 pm) -- Get an early start on the weekend TONIGHT with a special FREE tasting of some of our favorite wines from Australia!  What better wine to drink while hanging around the barbie than Australia's bold, lush, jammy reds.  Tonight's tasting features an interesting comparison of Shiraz and Shiraz-based wines from several Australian regions, as well as one of our favorite summer whites, including:

  • a rich, spicy Australian Pinot Gris that will change the way you think about Pinot Grigio!
  • a super value, peppery Shiraz made from grapes grown in the cool coastal areas of Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale
  • a complex, concentrated, blackberry-like Shiraz made from an outstanding boutique winery in the high-altitude vineyards of Eden Valley
  • a rich, over-the-top, vanilla-laced blend of Cabernet, Merlot, and Shiraz grown in the hot, arid vineyards of Barossa Valley

Of course, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites or mix up a case of the featured wines and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!

SUMMER WINES FROM AUSTRIA (Fri, Aug 1, 6-8 pm) -- Not to be confused with Australia, Austria is quickly building an excellent reputation with impressive wines that couldn't be more different than those from the other A-region.  Unlike Australia, Austria excels with native grape varieties like Gruner Veltliner (its most important white) and Zweigelt (its own smooth, spicy red).  Best of all for our purposes, the cool, moderate climate produces fresh, clean, vibrant wines with pure fruit flavors that are hard to beat for summer refreshmentWant to see what we mean?  Stop by this Friday for a special FREE in-store tasting of summer wine values from Austria, including:

  • a lovely, delicate rosé of Zweigelt
  • an unbeatable value in Austrian Gruner Veltliner, featuring zesty, food-friendly flavors of green apple and white pepper
  • a super refreshing white that was the hands-down favorite at our recent staff seminar on Austrian wines
  • a fun, festive red blend of Pinot Noir, St-Laurent, and Merlot that's perfect for casual summer entertaining

The wines will be presented by special guest and Austrian importer Klaus Wittauer.  As usual, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites or mix up a case of the featured wines for summer drinking and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!

Hot Tip Pinot Noir & Italian Tasting Tonight!

DON'T MISS THIS WEEK'S HOT TIP & TONIGHT'S FREE TASTING OF AFFORDABLE ITALIANS (Thur, July 24, 6-8 pm)!

A HOT TIP ON AFFORDABLE PINOT NOIR -- Always on the lookout for reasonably-priced Pinot Noir that you can afford to drink everyday?  If you're a Pinot lover, you probably know that the Sideways effect, the strong euro, and the sagging economy have conspired to make the phrase "affordable Pinot" an oxymoron.  That's what makes the 2007 Kris Pinot Nero so refreshing.  That and the cool climate of Alto Adige, where the grapes are grown.  While Pinot Noir may not be the first thing you think of when you think of Italy, Italy's northernmost province of Alto Adige seems to excel with this entire family of grapes -- Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and yes, Pinot NoirMade almost entirely in stainless steel to preserve the character of the fruit, with just a small percentage of the wine being aged in oak, Kris features classic flavors of ripe, earthy black cherry and a hint of sweet spices.  But it's the price to quality ratio that makes it stand out, with last year's vintage being called one of the World's 30 Best Pinot Noirs by Food & Wine magazine.  The 2007 vintage has just arrived, sporting all the freshness and character of the previous vintage at just $16.99.  The only bad news:  Quantities are limited and when it's gone, it's gone.  Want to give it a spin?  Just stop by the tasting bar TONIGHT (see "Affordable Italians" below).  Not only will you have a chance to give it a whirl, you'll also enjoy the tasting bar discount off the already affordable price!  Can't make it this evening?  You can still get in on this impressive value.  Just give us a call or mention this email to receive these special, email only discounts:

  • Buy 6 bottles of Kris Pinot Nero and pay just $15.49 a bottle
  • Buy 12 or more bottles and pay just $13.99 a bottle!

Offer good Thursday, July 24 through Wednesday, July 30 or while supplies last.

AFFORDABLE ITALIANS TONIGHT (Thur, July 24, 6-8 pm) --  Looking for an excuse to get out and about in the gorgeous, cooler weather this evening?  Why not take a stroll in Shirlington and pop in for a special FREE tasting of affordable Italians!  Tonight's tasting spans the length of the Italian peninsula, easily one of the world's most diverse and exciting regions -- a seemingly endless selection of interesting wines to discover.  Stop by tonight and sample hidden gems that would otherwise be flying under your radar, including:

  • A crisp, charming white with soft, melon-like fruit and the thoroughly perplexing name of Est! Est!! Est!!!
  • full-bodied, satin-textured white with flavors of apricot and candied pineapple made in Sardinia from the little-known Nuragas grape
  • This week's Hot Tip Pinot Nero from the cool, hillside vineyards of Alto Adige
  • A spicy, earthy red from Salice Salentino, deep in the heel of Italy's boot

Of course, you'll also enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorite wines!  Better yet, mix up a case of the featured wines for summertime drinking and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!  Hope to see you there!

Saturday Tasting Chablis

Chablis

Remember the days of Gallo and Almaden Chablis? Well, we have come a long way. This Saturday experience some of the best Chablis available from 1-4pm.

2006 Domaine Joseph Drouhin A ripe nose that is still clearly Chablis in origin complements the rich, round and moderately precise mineral-infused flavors that culminate in a fresh and agreeable finish. Good if not exceptional quality here. Regular Price $23.49 Tasting Price $19.99

2006 Domaine des Malandes Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume A relatively high-toned and elegant mix of citrus, white flower and green fruit aromas also features hints of iodine and oyster shell that gives way to textured and relatively concentrated flavors that possess real complexity on the mouth coating, sappy and admirably long finish. Regular Price $35.99 Tasting Price $30.99

2005 Domaine Vocoret et Fils Chablis Valmur Grand Cru A discreet if not invisible touch of brioche and oak spice frames elegant pure and refined green fruit aromas nuanced by seashore hints that continue onto the detailed, precise, minerally and beautifully balanced middle weight flavors that finish with a youthful sense of austerity and excellent length. The style is understated in the context of the typical Vocoret wine. Regular Price $59.99 Tasting Price $50.99

2005 Domaine des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Here the wood is a bit more noticeable with bright and airy white flower and subtle spice notes introducing seriously intense and powerful medium full flavors that are pungently mineral, all wrapped in a strikingly long pain grillé and citrus-infused finish. This is also quite a powerful wine and like the Vaudésir, will need ample time.

Regular Price $69.99 Tasting Price $59.99

UP-AND-COMING WINES OF PORTUGAL TONIGHT (Thur, July 17, 6-8 pm) -- Always looking for affordable wines that are a little off the beaten track?  The new Portugal should be on your radar screen!  A winemaking region with an ancient history and a diverse climate suitable for producing a wide range of wines, Portugal has historically focused on producing very traditional, local wines, perhaps best described as robust, if rustic.  Today, Portuguese winemakers are working hard to modernize their grapegrowing and winemaking to produce cleaner, richer wines that compete on the world stage.  Better yet, since the country's reputation hasn't yet caught up to the emerging quality, the best wines still sell for bargain pricesWant to see what we mean?  Stop by the tasting bar TONIGHT for a special FREE tasting of impressive, modern Portuguese values.  You'll sample:

  • a delicious, dry white Port, used all over Portugal to make a refreshing  cocktail during the hot summer months
  • a dry, delightful, pale pink rosé made from traditional Portuguese grape varieties
  • a pair of robust, well-made reds from lesser-known regions that offer sensational value, especially for barbeque
  • a gorgeous, silky, oak-aged red from Alentejo, that's been one of the hits of the spring this year!

Of course, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount off these already affordable prices.  Like what you taste?  Why not mix up a case of Portuguese wines for summer drinking and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!  Reservations are not required for this tasting; simply stop by any time from 6-8 pm.  Hope to see you there!

**CHERYL'S TOUR DE FRANCE TASTING** (Fri, July 18, 6-8 pm) -- Whether you're a wine nut or a cycling nut (or both!), you won't want to miss THIS Friday's special, FREE in-store tasting that tracks the progress of the Tour so far -- in wine!  Beginning just north of the Loire Valley, the race has already woven in and out of wine regions, travelling through the picturesque Loire, passing by Gascony on its way toward the Spanish border, then looping around to zoom through the Languedoc, now approaching Nimes in the deep south.  This Friday's tasting features a diverse selection of wines from all along this track, including:

  • crisp, refreshing white from the Loire
  • an often-overlooked, but super value from the Gascony region
  • robust, spicy reds from the deep south
  • a new favorite, charming, aromatic white from Costieres de Nimes

Fattoria di Felsina Wines

Fattoria di Felsina Wines

2004 Fattoria di Felsina Fontalloro The 2004 Fontalloro (100% Sangiovese) comes across as fresher and brighter than the Rancia. Light on its feet, this graceful, delicate wine opens with sweet, perfumed aromatics that meld into raspberries, flowers, spices and a touch of sweet oak that lingers on the finish. It offers remarkable clarity and precision in a pure, focused style, with superb balance and finessed tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2019. WA 94pts

Regular Price $56.99 Sale Price $47.99

2004 Fattoria di Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia I have tasted Felsina's 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia on at least three separate occasions and have never been anything less than deeply impressed. This is a serious Chianti endowed with endless layers of sweet dark cherries, smoke, minerals, flowers and sweet toasted oak. With air the layers fill out, revealing an expansive, richly-textured wine of pure breed. At times the wine has been incredibly primary and brooding, while at other times it has shown the sheer power it holds in reserve. This is a great effort from Felsina. Simply put, it is a wine fit for kings and queens. Rancia also happens to be one of the finest values in wine today. Needless to say, it is highly recommended. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. WA 95pts

L'Aventure

L'Aventure
As you can see, quantities are extremely limited, all wines are in stock

2005 L'Aventure Optimus  94pts    $39.99                32 bottles available
The least expensive red wine is the Optimus cuvee. The 2005 Optimus (51% Syrah, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot) barely qualifies as a Rhone Ranger, but it offers classic chocolate, cassis, espresso, and subtle wood notes along with a dense ruby/purple hue, gorgeous concentration, and plenty of spice, cedar, and a Pauillac-like complexity and richness. This serious effort is more French than Californian. It should drink well for 6-10 years.

2006 L'Aventure Estate Cuvee  97pts    $79.99 ea      8 bottles available
A thrilling, nearly perfect efforts is the 2006 Estate Cuvee. A blend of 49% Syrah, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2006 Estate Cuvee may be even better. Tasting like a superb example of a premier grand cru St.-Emilion made from California-s limestone soils, it exhibits a dense purple color as well as a perfume of sweet creme de cassis, fruitcake, licorice, incense, tobacco leaf, and spice box. A voluptuous texture, fabulous opulence, and thrilling concentration as well as purity make for a prodigious example of blended red wine that will provide enormous pleasure and complexity for 12-15+ years.

Transplanted Frenchman, Stephan Asseo (from St.-Emilion), has found a home as well as some great terroirs in the limestone soils of Paso Robles (all his vineyards are situated on the western side of Highway 101). Asseo continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L-Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent.

2006 L'Aventure Cote a Cote 96pts  $84.99    20 bottles available
The 2006 Cote a Cote Proprietary Red is a blend of 40% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, and 30% Syrah. Another superstar in the L-Aventure portfolio, it possesses an inky/purple color along with a sumptuous, sweet bouquet of roasted meats, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis, licorice, and chocolate. Dense and full-bodied with fabulous intensity, opulence, and flesh, but no hard edges, it will provide immense pleasure over the next decade.

LOIRE VALLEY SEMINAR SERIES (Continues Wed, July 9, 6 & 8 pm) --  Our 4-Part seminar series on France's picturesque Loire Valley concludes next week, with Part 4, exploring some of the region's most famous appellations, including Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé in the far eastern part of the valley.  Not surprisingly with Burgundy located due east of this area, this easternmost part of the Loire focuses on cooler climate grapes, including Pinot Noir for reds and rosés and Sauvignon Blanc for whites.  In addition to taking a closer look at these famous appellations, we'll also explore their lesser-known neighbors like Quincy, Reuilly, and Menetou-Salon.   As always, the wines will be paired with authentic, regional cheeses presented by cheese guru Katie Park.  Of course, you'll also receive informative maps and reference materials that you can refer to again and again.  Plus you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorite wines!

As always, the seminar is FREE but space is limited, so reservations are required.  Part 4 will be offered at three different times, on Wed, July 9 at 6 & 7 pm and Sat, July 12 at 1 pm.  All sessions will be presented by a Certified Wine Educator or Certified Specialist of Wine from the Curious Grape staff.  To reserve, just give us a call at 703-671-8700 (no email reservations please).

Come Join Us This Saturday

For those of you who didn't get out of town, come and join us this Saturday to taste a selection of wines from both the 05 and 06 vintage.

2006 Faiveley Burgundies (Finally Arrived)

It appears as if Burgundy has done it again and once again the quantities of the super stars are going to be small. The reviews are both from Steve Tanzer (International Wine Cellar) and Alan Meadows (Burghound)

All orders will be confirmed

Gevrey Chambertin Ier Cru "La Combe aux Moines"  (89-92)

Reg Bot  $99.99      Sale Price  $74.99

Magnums  $199.99 Sale Price  $159.99

Medium red. Aromatic nose offers cherry, red berries, licorice and mint. Pure, precise and penetrating, with high-pitched, fruit-driven flavors of red berries, spices and minerals. Not at all an animal style of Combe aux Moines. Finishes with noteworthy subtlety and sweet tannins.

Nuits St Georges Ier Cru "Les St Georges"  (91-93)

Reg Bot  $139.99    Sale Price  $109.99

Magnums  $279.99 Sale Price  $219.99

Bright ruby-red. Knockout nose melds flowers, minerals, smoke, musky game and a primary berry element like crushed grapes. Superrich and silky, with an exhilarating tangy quality and the balance and length of a grand cru. Subtle smoky nuances on the very long finish, which features lush, thoroughly buffered tannins. This wine was fermented in wood vats with 20% whole clusters (as was the Echezeaux and Latricieres-Chambertin) and aged in 40% new oak (compared to 50% for most of the other premier crus here).

Corton Grand Cru "Clos des Cortons"  (93-96)

Reg Bot  $179.99    Sale Price  $149.99

Magnums  $359.99 Sale Price  $309.99

Good deep red-ruby. Explosive, exotic nose offers red cherry, red licorice and mint. Huge and sweet, but with outstanding verve and lift for a wine of this dimension. Powerful red fruit flavors are punched up by pungent iodiney minerality, giving this wine outstanding energy. A great sappy essence of pinot noir in the making, and very long on the aftertaste, with tannins that are amazingly suave for Corton.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru  (92-95)

Reg Bot  $189.99    Sale Price  $149.99

Magnums  $379.99 Sale Price  $309.99

Here the wood is decidedly more discreet with reserved and layered earthy and slightly animale red, blue and violet aromas that introduce delicious, intense and strikingly powerful flavors that are sleekly muscled and possess serious weight and length. Despite the sheer size however, this delivers its punch with both style and grace and I found this to possess simply huge potential. Highly recommended but note that this is crafted in the classic Faiveley old school style and will require as much as two decades to reach its apogee.

Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru  (92-95)

Reg Bot  $229.99    Sale Price  $179.99

Magnums  $459.99 Sold Out

Deep red. Musky, wild small berries, brown spices, minerals and game on the complex nose. Suave, silky and sweet, but with noteworthy energy to its tactile saline, earth and mineral flavors. Much less about pinot fruit than about soil. This uncoils slowly on the back half, with the tannins arriving very late. Hervet notes that Faiveley pulled up the 20% or so of these vines that were planted on SO4 rootstock, which produced larger clusters, and that the improvement in the wine was immediate.

Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru  (93-96)

Reg Bot  $299.99    Sale Price  $249.99

Magnums  $599.99 Sold Out

Deep red-ruby. Pure but reticent nose hints at wild berries, crushed stone and dried flowers. Pure, pungent, sappy and almost painfully young today, with terrific intensity to its tight core of berry, mineral, floral and spice flavors. Finishes with outstanding palate-saturating length. This is likely to be one of the longer-lived wines of this vintage. At this point in our tasting, Hervet compared 2005 and 2006 to the 1961/1962 pair, noting that the '62s were balanced for long aging.

Everyday Everyday (at these prices, case lots only)

2006 Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay                $199 per case

2006 Bourgogne Rouge Pinot Noir                   $199 per case

2006 Macon Village Chardonnay                       $199 per case

2006 Mercurey Blanc "Clos Rochette"             $300 per case

2005 Mercurey Blanc "La Croix Jacquelet"    $300 per case

2005 Mercurey "Croix Jacquelet            Regular Price  $29.99        Sale Price  $24.99

Not Reviewed

2005 Mercurey Clos Myglands               Regular Price  $39.99        Sale Price  $34.99

Easily the most elegant of these three Mercurey examples with pretty raspberry and cherry aromas that precede supple, precise and sweet flavors supported by firm and mouth coating tannins and excellent length. This is a little dry on the finish at present and will need time to fully round out.

Loire Valley Seminar Tonight (Wed, July 2)!

TAKE A TRIP TO FRANCE'S LOIRE VALLEY WITH TONIGHT'S FREE SEMINAR (Wed, July 2 at 6 pm)!

Want to learn more about France's gorgeous, picturesque Loire Valley? Join us TONIGHT for Part 3 of our comprehensive 4-Part series on this fascinating region.  Part 3 of the series takes us to the Touraine area, surrounding the city of Tours as we move east through the long river valley.  Here, as the climate changes from maritime to continental, so too the grape varieties change from Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc to Sauvignon Blanc and a potpourri of red blends.  This week's session, presented by Certified Wine Educator Suzanne McGrath, offers the opportunity to explore little-known appellations like Cheverny, Cour Cheverny, and Touraine while enjoying refreshing whites and unusual reds (Malbec in the Loire Valley?) that offer excellent value for summer drinking -- if you know where to look!

Although tonight's 7 pm session is already full, we still have a few spaces left in the 6 pm session.  To reserve, just give us a call at 703-671-8700 (no email reservations please).  Please note that due to this week's holiday, tonight's session is the last chance to catch Part 3; there will be no session this Saturday.

The session will conclude next week with Part 4, focusing on the far eastern part of the Loire, including Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé.  Part 4 will be offered at three different times, on Wed, July 9 at 6 & 7 pm and Sat, July 12 at 1 pm.

See you in the Loire!
