Some wine shops in NoVa have e-mail lists of their tastings, but they are not quite hip to the blog concept. I aggregate those e-mail messages here to make my life easier. Shops include The Curious Grape in Shirlington,VA and Wide World of Wine in DC. I am in no way affiliated with any of these businesses.

Saturday Tasting California Wines/ California Cult Wines

Saturday Tasting

California Wines/ California Cult Wines

Malena Paz

1-4pm

Juliet Peery Wines

In our partnership with Beckstoffer Vineyards we harvest fruit from two of Andy Beckstoffer's most prestigious vineyards – the historic Tokalon vineyard in Oakville and the Las Amigas vineyard in Carneros.

Juliet Peery is a proprietary blend, dynamic in its focus to highlight the best of each year's offering. Every year we hand-pick only the best Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec to create Juliet Peery. Recognizing that every harvest is unique, we embrace the annual differences in the character of each variety. For us and those who enjoy the wine, it's an illuminating study of a vintage and the impact of Mother Nature on its terrain.

2001 Marshall Cellars Juliet Peery Proprietary Red

Regular Price $59.99    Tasting Price $29.99

2002 Marshall Cellars Juliet Peery Propietary Blend Beckstoffer Reserve

Regular Price $59.99    Tasting Price $29.99

2004 Palazzo Wine Proprietary Red Scott Palazzo has fashioned a stylish, European-inspired dry red offering wonderful sweet black cherry, cassis, lead pencil shavings, pain grille, and licorice aromas. Medium-bodied, elegant, and refined, it is accessible at present, but will be even better with another year or so of bottle age. It should evolve nicely for a decade. It's nice to see such finesse styled efforts emerging from California as there is often a misconception that everything produced in that state is too ripe, too big, and too extracted. Regular Price $49.99 Tasting Price $42.49

We will not taste the following wines…

5 bottles 2003 Bryant                             $479 ea

3 bottles 2002 Bryant                             $529 ea

5 bottles 1996 Harlan                             $800 ea

5 bottles 1997 Pahlmeyer                       $300 ea

TWO MORE MEMBERS OF THE CURIOUS GRAPE STAFF EARN CERTIFIED SPECIALIST OF WINE DESIGNATION!  The Curious Grape is thrilled to announce that staff members Paige Butler and Jon Brandt have just obtained the designation of Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) from the Society of Wine Educators!  With the addition of Jon and Paige, the Curious Grape now has 11 Certified Specialists of Wine on staff!  A significant accomplishment, successfully obtaining this designation requires extensive knowledge of all aspects of wine and wine making.  In order to prepare for certification, Curious Grape staff members undergo a rigorous 7-month wine education program developed by Certified Wine Educator Suzanne McGrath, then sit for a challenging examination, internationally-administered by the Society of Wine Educators.  As a result, the Curious Grape has one of the most highly-trained staffs in the DC area!  To celebrate their achievement, Jon and Paige will be hosting special, FREE in-store tastings, featuring some of their favorite wines:

  • Saturday, May 24, 3-5 pm -- Stop by the tasting bar and chat with Paige as she pours a selection of diverse whites made from Chenin Blanc, her new favorite grape!

FREE IN-STORE EVENTS

WINE 101 SEMINAR (Continuing THIS Sat, Apr 26, 1 pm) -- Want to learn more about wine?  There's still time to catch Part 1 of Wine 101, a two-part series that will turn you into a pro on understanding wine essentials in just 2 short weeks!  Offered in two parts, the series walks you through how to taste, understand and evaluate wine, along with a familiarity with the world's most important grape varieties and wine regions.  Each session is presented by a Certified Wine Educator or Certified Specialist of Wine from the Curious Grape staff.  Reserve now to join us for either or both parts:

  • Part 1:  The Elements of Wine (Sat, April 26 at 1 pm) -- The first session of the series offers an in-depth exploration of the elements of red and white wines, how they fit together, how to taste and evaluate wine, and how you can use these elements to judge quality, complexity, balance, and age-worthiness.  Of course, you'll sample a range of wines that illustrate the elements of sweetness vs. fruitiness, tannins, alcohol, acidity, and more!  Not necessarily for beginners (but a great way to start), this fascinating session is for anyone who wants to have a better understanding of what they're tasting.
  • Part 2:  Top Grape Varieties & Regions (Wed, Apr 30 at 6 & 7 pm and Sat, May 3 at 1 pm)  --  What grape varieties should you really know to be conversant in wine and where do the world's most important wines come from?  This session explores the most important red and white grape varieties, their unique personalities and characteristics, and which regions produce the best examples of wine made from each variety, all illustrated through a guided wine tasting.

As usual, these special in-store seminars are FREE but space is limited so reservations are required.  You may reserve for the 6 pm, 7 pm, or Saturday session of either or both seminars.  To reserve, just give us a call at 703-671-8700 (no email reservations please!).

Name That Grape Tasting Tonight (Thu, Apr 24)!

**STOP BY THE TASTING BAR TONIGHT & NAME THAT GRAPE ** (Thur, Apr 24, 6-8 pm)!

Wow, it's going to be a gorgeous day!  Why not get out for a little fun after the work day's done and pop down to Shirlington for another installment in Cheryl's "Name That Grape" tasting series!  Cheryl's pulled together a pair of whites and a surprising trio of reds, each of which are based on a common grape.  You'll sample:

  • a pair of zesty, citrusy whites from regions located across the world from each other
  • a surprising trio made from one of our favorite red grapes, including the return of a gorgeous, 91-point red that sold out in a nanosecond last time we offered it for tasting

Can you detect the hallmark characters shared by each wine and ultimately name the grapes?  It's a fresh new way to enjoy and think about wine!  Best of all, when the wines are revealed, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on the ones that were your favorites!  Want to have even more fun?  Why not purchase the lot and hold your own "name that grape" tasting with your friends?!

Reservations are not required for this tasting; simply stop by anytime between 6 & 8 pm.  Hope to see you there!

A NOTE ABOUT PARKING:  Although parking in Shirlington can look like a challenge, especially when the warm weather draws crowds, there's plenty of FREE parking in the garage located immediately behind our store.  Despite all the "reserved" signs in that garage, ALL SPACES are open to ALL CUSTOMERS after 6 pm on weeknights and ANY TIME ON WEEKENDS.  With eight levels of parking, there's always plenty of room!

Special Free Tasting Tonight (Tue, Apr 22)!

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH TONIGHT'S FASCINATING TASTING OF EARTH-FRIENDLY WINES (Tue, Apr 22, 6-8 pm)!

Want to learn how the wine industry is "going green" while also tasting some fantastic wines?  Stop by the tasting bar TONIGHT, Tuesday, April 22 from 6-8 pm for a special FREE tasting that explores the wide variety of sustainable practices being used increasingly by wineries all over the world.  While the thought of green wines may make you think mostly of wines made using organic or biodynamically-grown grapes, these practices are just the tip of the iceberg in the wine industry's efforts to go green.  Other interesting developments include setting aside lands adjacent to vineyards to preserve natural flora species, constructing green wineries that utilize all natural or recycled materials and low-engergy processes, and minimizing winery waste while maximizing recycling.  In all these ways, wineries world wide are trying to blend into and minimize their impacts on the environment -- all without sacrificing quality in the bottle!  In fact, entire wine regions, like South Africa and New Zealand, are developing sustainability programs and standards and encouraging wineries to participate.

Tonight's tasting features selections from earth-friendly wineries from all over the globe and illustrates some of the myriad ways in which wineries are helping to protect the planet.  Why not stop by and sample:

  • a brand new, highly-rated 2007 Sauvignon Blanc from a winery participating in South Africa's Biodiversity & Wine Initiative
  • a crisp, highly-rated Chardonnay from one of Italy's best-known, state-of-the-art "green" wineries located in the mountains of Alto Adige
  • a lush, aromatic -- and affordable -- white Cotes du Rhone made from organically-grown grapes
  • the new vintage of one of our favorite Pinot Noirs from Willakenzie of Oregon, a trailblazer in sustainable viticulture
  • a gorgeous, 92-Point Malbec, made from biodynamically grown grapes on the highest altitude vineyard in the world!

Of course, in addition to tasting, you'll also enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorite wines.  Even better:  mix up a case of the wines being tasted and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!

Reservations are not required for this tasting; simply stop by anytime between 6 & 8 pm.  Hope to see you there!

2003 by Bollinger/Bordeaux

2003 by Bollinger

2003 will remain forever engraved in the memory if the Chapenois as unique in every way. It started under heavy snow and very low temperatures until the very end of February. Without any perceivable transition, spring showed signs of precocity, a mild weather followed by sudden heat woke up the vines, giving birth to the first buds, especially in the Grand Crus areas.

But the spectacular frosts of the night of April 11th destroyed a large number of them. New buds gradually appeared generating extremely spread out flowering episodes. June saw extremely violent thunderstorms with hail, which destroyed more buds and flowers…Summer was characterized by the heat wave that everyone remembers al over Europe.

The harvest was historically early (a record since 1822) and finished by August 13th at Bollinger. It turned out to be a very low crop for Bollinger. As our vineyards, essentially composed of Grands and Premiers Crus, were particularly struck by all the climatic accidents.

We wanted to celebrate this astonishing year in our own way by producing a very unique and non typical wine in the lineage of Bollinger. We have blended Pinot Noirs from Ay and Verzenay together with Chardonnays from Cuis the Houses' 3 most historical vineyards, a trilogy for 2003, hence the name "2003 by Bollinger"

SURPRISING OFF-THE-BEATEN-TRACK SELECTIONS (Sat, Apr 12, 12-4 pm) -- Do you ever get tired of the same old thing?  If you'd like to freshen up your wine selection with something different, stop by the tasting bar THIS Saturday afternoon with an eye-opening lineup of often overlooked wines that are off the beaten track.   Where in the world do you find something new and exciting in worthwhile whites?  Think you know Beaujolais?  Saturday's tasting provides the answers.  You'll sample:

  • A totally unique, dry, tangerine-tinged white made from Hungary's Furmint grape, better known -- if at all -- as the base for the legendary sweet wines of Tokaji, but making a comeback with dry wines
  • A 90-Point Austrian Gruner Veltliner that's good enough for the Pope! (for details, see below)
  • A Pinot look-alike:  The hand's down favorite from the recent French Wine Society tasting of Beaujolais Crus, that's sure to blow you away!
  • An all-new, fun-loving and unlikely blend of Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot from California

Of course, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites or mix up a case of the wines being tasted and enjoy a special discount of 15%.

WINE OF THE POPE

Move over Chateauneuf-du-Pape!  What wine does Pope Benedict XVI favor?  Word has it that when the Pope's in town next week, he'll be drinking none other than the 2006 Stadt Krems Gruner Veltliner Sandgrube, a ripe, lush white from Austria, made in a dry (trocken) style.  If it's good enough for the Pope, it should come as no surprise that the wine also just received 90 Points from the Wine Spectator!

"Intense, with concentrated flavors of ripe pear, baked apple, apricot and spice. Long finish features lemon curd, spice and meringue."

Delish!  An unusual winery, Stadt Krems is owned by the municipality of Krems, Austria and produces wines from vineyards within the city limits, some of which were donated to the city 550 years, making it one of the oldest wineries in Europe.  The wines are now made by up-and-coming winemaker Fritz Miesbauer, under whose leadership the wines have gained rapid recognition.  This one, from the vineyard called "Sandgrube" --  with sandy soils -- is made entirely in stainless steel to showcase the freshness of the Gruner Veltliner fruit -- freshness that's also enhanced by the wine's high-tech Vino-Lok glass stopper, popular with Austrian and German wines these days.

Best of all, the Sandgrube is also an excellent value at just 18.99Want a better deal?  In honor of the Pope's visit, which takes place next Tuesday through Thursday, we're offering special discounts.  Just mention this email and receive special, email-only pricing:

      • $17.99 by the bottle
      • 6 or more bottles for just $16.99
      • Buy 12 or more bottles and pay just $$14.99!

For more information on the Pope's visit, check out this link:  http://www.adw.org/papalvisit/

RESERVE NOW!

WINE 101 SEMINAR (Beginning Wed, Apr 23, 6 & 7 pm) -- Want to learn more about wine?  Have we got the seminar for you!  Join us for Wine 101, a two-part series that will turn you into a pro on understanding wine essentials in just 2 short weeks!  Offered in two parts, the series walks you through how to taste and evaluate wine, along with a familiarity with the world's most important grape varieties and wine regions.  Reserve now to join us for either or both parts:

  • Part 1:  The Elements of Wine (Wed, April 23 at 6 & 7 pm and Sat, April 26 at 1 pm) -- The first session of the series offers an in-depth exploration of the elements of red and white wines, how they fit together, how to taste and evaluate wine, and how you can use these elements to judge quality, complexity, balance, and age-worthiness.

Saturday Tasting/Save the Date

Saturday Tasting

Syrah/Shiraz

1-4pm

Domaine Philippe and Vincent Jaboulet

The Jaboulet family has been respected as vignerons in Crozes-Hermitage for more than 200 ears. Pioneers in Rhone, they discovered the greatness of the appellation and gained attention for it as a top wine-producing region. Then, in the early 19th Century, Antoine Jaboulet founded Paul Jaboulet Aine, which became one of the most venerable negociant firms in the Rhone. It was sold to Jean-Jaques Frey, owner of Chateau La Lagune, in January 2006.

Today, Philippe and Vincent Jaboulet, 5th and 6th generation vigneron repectively, are both starting fresh and carrying on the Jaboulet family winemaking legacy in Crozes-Hermitage with the establishment of Domaine Philippe and Vincent Jaboulet. Father and son will share all winemaking and vineyard responsibilities.

2005 Jaboulet Crozes-Hermitage Rouge This wine is made entirely with Syrah, which gives it a strong red color with intense purple reflections. The nose has abundant ripe fruit, dominated by black currant and raspberry, and a hint of spiciness and leather as it ages. On the palate it is elegant with soft, velvety tannins.

Regular Price $29.99 Tasting Price $25.49

2005 Jaboulet Syrah (Vind de Pays de La  Drome) Produced from grapes grown in the vineyard surrounding Domaine Philippe & Vincent Jaboulet, this wine is made with 100% Syrah and shows fresh fruit on the nose and palate captured in a light and enjoyable style. The Jaboulets have decided to refrain from giving it the Crozes-hermitage designation due to their respect for the appellation. As the vineyard is rejuvenated, the wine will change and in time will earn the honor of a Crozes-hermitage designation. Regular Price $16.99 Tasting Price $14.49

2005 Mitolo Shiraz G A M Fashioned from a McLaren Vale vineyard, the 2005 Shiraz G.A.M. (named after the Mitolo children – Gemma, Alexander, and Marco) is a deep ruby/purple-hued effort displaying beautiful blackberry, white pepper, licorice, and toasty oak notes. Rich, full-bodied, and intense, with blueberry and blackberry flavors, sweet tannin, and excellent purity, it is a tour de force in winemaking. Enjoy it over the next decade. Regular Price $54.99 Tasting Price $42.99

2005 Massena Shiraz The 11Th Hour From 60- to 100-year old vines that were saved from the bulldozer during the infamous Barossa "vine pull" (hence the name), the 2005 Shiraz 11th Hour was cropped at .5 tons of fruit per acre, and aged in 100% French oak, of which 5% was new. Sweet, pure aromas of blackberries, blueberries, crushed pepper, and flowers jump from the glass of this inky/purple-colored Shiraz. As one might expect from such tiny yields, it is a wine of great intensity, massive body, and tremendous purity, definition, and length. While still primary, it gives all the indications of being a modern day classic that should last and improve for 15-20 years. Regular Price $44.99 Tasting Price $36.99

  • a spicy, juicy blend of Grenache and Syrah from Campo de Borja, a hotbed of values

2006 Faiveley Burgundies

2006 Faiveley Burgundies

It appears as if Burgundy has done it again and once again the quantities of the super stars are going to be small.  We have just received confirmation on our 06 Faiveley Burgundies which should arrive in May.  The reviews are both from Steve Tanzer (International Wine Cellar) and Alan Meadows (Burghound)

All orders will be confirmed

Gevrey Chambertin Ier Cru "La Combe aux Moines" (89-92)

Reg Bot  $76.99  Magnums  $153.99

Medium red. Aromatic nose offers cherry, red berries, licorice and mint. Pure, precise and penetrating, with high-pitched, fruit-driven flavors of red berries, spices and minerals. Not at all an animal style of Combe aux Moines. Finishes with noteworthy subtlety and sweet tannins.

Nuits St Georges Ier Cru "Les St Georges"        (91-93)

Reg Bot  $105.99         Magnums  $309.99

Bright ruby-red. Knockout nose melds flowers, minerals, smoke, musky game and a primary berry element like crushed grapes. Superrich and silky, with an exhilarating tangy quality and the balance and length of a grand cru. Subtle smoky nuances on the very long finish, which features lush, thoroughly buffered tannins. This wine was fermented in wood vats with 20% whole clusters (as was the Echezeaux and Latricieres-Chambertin) and aged in 40% new oak (compared to 50% for most of the other premier crus here).

Corton Grand Cru "Clos des Cortons" (93-96)

Reg Bot  $149.99         Magnums  $299.99

Good deep red-ruby. Explosive, exotic nose offers red cherry, red licorice and mint. Huge and sweet, but with outstanding verve and lift for a wine of this dimension. Powerful red fruit flavors are punched up by pungent iodiney minerality, giving this wine outstanding energy. A great sappy essence of pinot noir in the making, and very long on the aftertaste, with tannins that are amazingly suave for Corton.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru (92-95)

Reg Bot  $149.99         Magnums  $299.99

Here the wood is decidedly more discreet with reserved and layered earthy and slightly animale red, blue and violet aromas that introduce delicious, intense and strikingly powerful flavors that are sleekly muscled and possess serious weight and length. Despite the sheer size however, this delivers its punch with both style and grace and I found this to possess simply huge potential. Highly recommended but note that this is crafted in the classic Faiveley old school style and will require as much as two decades to reach its apogee.

Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru         (92-95)

Reg Bot  $179.99         Magnums  $364.99

Deep red. Musky, wild small berries, brown spices, minerals and game on the complex nose. Suave, silky and sweet, but with noteworthy energy to its tactile saline, earth and mineral flavors. Much less about pinot fruit than about soil. This uncoils slowly on the back half, with the tannins arriving very late. Hervet notes that Faiveley pulled up the 20% or so of these vines that were planted on SO4 rootstock, which produced larger clusters, and that the improvement in the wine was immediate.

Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru        (93-96)

Reg Bot  $259.99         Magnums  $519.99

Deep red-ruby. Pure but reticent nose hints at wild berries, crushed stone and dried flowers. Pure, pungent, sappy and almost painfully young today, with terrific intensity to its tight core of berry, mineral, floral and spice flavors. Finishes with outstanding palate-saturating length. This is likely to be one of the longer-lived wines of this vintage. At this point in our tasting, Hervet compared 2005 and 2006 to the 1961/1962 pair, noting that the '62s were balanced for long aging.
