Some wine shops in NoVa have e-mail lists of their tastings, but they are not quite hip to the blog concept. I aggregate those e-mail messages here to make my life easier. Shops include The Curious Grape in Shirlington,VA and Wide World of Wine in DC. I am in no way affiliated with any of these businesses.

Australian Wine Tonight + Napa Cabernet Event

DON'T MISS TONIGHT'S AUSTRALIAN WINEMAKER TASTING (Tue, Feb 26) & CUTTING EDGE GERMAN WINES ON WEDNESDAY (Feb 27)

PLUS: RESERVE NOW FOR A VERY SPECIAL TASTING OF NAPA VALLEY CABERNETS (Mon, Mar 10)

TASTE WITH A GUEST FROM DOWN UNDER TONIGHT (Tue, Feb 26, 6-8 pm) -- If the lush, satisfying wines of Australia are some of your favorites, you won't want to miss TONIGHT'S special FREE in-store tasting with Duncan MacGillivray, owner of Australia's Longview Vineyards!  Always a favorite guest, Duncan owns a gorgeous vineyard and winery in the Adelaide Hills area between Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.  In addition to producing wines from Australia's most popular grapes like Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Cabernet, Duncan also excels with some surprises, including Viognier, Zinfandel, and Nebbiolo.  Why not stop by tonight and say g'day while sampling:

  • A lovely, crisp, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc, a grape that struggles in Australia's heat but excels in the cooler climate of Adelaide Hills
  • ripe, round Viognier, most often blended with Shiraz in Australia but used here for whites as well
  • A headyspicy Zinfandel, one of the few from Australia
  • An impressive, 94-Point Shiraz from a single vineyard

As usual, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites.  Or mix up a case of Longview wines and receive a special discount of 15%!    Reservations are not required for this tasting; just stop by between 6 and 8 pm!

ALL-NEW WINES FROM AUSTRIA & GERMANY (Wed, Feb 27, 6 - 8 pm) --Wondering where the most exciting trends are occuring in the world of wine these days?  From the looks of this Wednesday's tasting line-up, Germany may be one place to watch!  Whether due to the impact of global warming or improvements in grape-growing that allow vintners to exploit warmer areas like the Pfalz, winemakers are pushing the envelope on what can be grown in this coolest of wineregions -- with some interesting results.  If you'd like to take a sneak peak at some of the exciting developments taking place in this tradition-bound area, stop by the tasting bar on Wednesday for the surprising line-up, including:

  • a lovely Sauvignon Blanc, a rare but successful appearance of this grape in Germany
  • a soft, silky Pinot Noir; not surprising since it's Germany's most popular red grape, but rare nonetheless because only a small amount is made
  • Cabernet and Syrah from Germany?!  Don't miss the chance to sample this bold, velvety, decidedly new world red
  • Did you happen to see the recent Wall Street Journal column on the red wines of Austria?  The tasting also features a ripe, peppery, Austrian Zweigelt featured in the article

Of course, the tasting is FREE, plus, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorite wines or mix up a case of the wines being tasted and receive a special discount of 15%!  Reservations are not required for this tasting; just drop by anytime from 6 to 8 pm!
