Some wine shops in NoVa have e-mail lists of their tastings, but they are not quite hip to the blog concept. I aggregate those e-mail messages here to make my life easier. Shops include The Curious Grape in Shirlington,VA and Wide World of Wine in DC. I am in no way affiliated with any of these businesses.

Burgundy Seminar & 4 Vines Tasting This Tue & Thur

RESERVE NOW FOR THIS WEEK'S FREE SEMINAR ON BURGUNDY (Tue, Oct 30) & FABULOUS FOUR VINES TASTING (Thur, Nov 1)!

FINDING VALUE IN BURGUNDY (Begins Tue, Oct 30, 6 & 7 pm) -- Quick:  When someone says "Burgundy", what's the first thing you think of?  If you said "red wine", you're only partially right.  Did you know that France's Burgundy region also produces some of the world's top white wines using the Chardonnay grape?  Unfortunately, while the region also excels with Pinot Noir, prices for good quality wines can be prohibitively high, with consistent quality proving difficult to find.  The mission of our next 5-part series on Burgundy, then, is simple:  Explore the ins and outs of this famous region, with a focus on finding the best values that the area has to offer.  Reserve now to join us for the first session in the series:  Burgundy Basics & Chablis, THIS Tuesday, October 30 at 6 & 7 pm and Saturday, November 3 at 1 pm.  Subsequent sessions will cover:

        • The Cote de Nuits
        • The Cote de Beaune
        • The South
        • Beaujolais

Each seminar will be presented by a Certified Wine Educator or Certified Specialist of Wine from the Curious Grape staff.  Not only will you enjoy an information-packed session, you'll also receive excellent, handy reference materials, plus you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on your favorite wines in the tasting!  While the session is FREE, space is limited, so reservations are required.  To reserve, give us a call at 703-671-8700 (no email reservations please).

Cedar-roasted Salmon with Maple Soy Glaze and Pienapple Cucumber Relish

Grilled Bacon-wrapped Shrimp with Spicy BBQ Glaze

ON THE TASTING BAR THIS WEEKEND

**CHERYL'S TOP PICKS FROM ITALY TONIGHT** (Fri, Oct 26, 6-8 pm) -- This week's rainy weather got you down?  Brighten up your Friday with a special tasting, featuring new vintages of some of Cheryl's favorite wines from Tuscany, Piedmont, and Italy's northeast.  As it did in other parts of Europe, the 2005 vintage produced some excellent wines in Italy, with perfecly ripe fruit and impressive balance.  Why not stop by and sample:

  • the new vintage of a long-favorite Italian white from just outside Venice
  • a trio of Tuscan reds, including a surprisingly juicy Chianti and a Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese and Merlot
  • a fun, peachy sparkler from Italy's Piedmont region

Of course, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorite wines or mix up a case of the wines being tasted and take a special discount of 15% off!  Hope to see you there!

HOT TIP

It's not often that a 96-point wine comes with a moderately affordable price tag.  But that just happens to be the case with the 2004 Bodegas LAN Rioja "Edicion Limitada", a top-flight wine from one of Spain's state-of-the-art wineries, that produces very small quantities of this wine from its very best grapes.  A perennial favorite, the wine enjoys consistently stellar reviews, with the 2002 scoring 95 points and the 2003 earning a place on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list.  Maintaining its track record, the 2004 is no disappointment:

"This powerful red is rich, thick, even syrupy on the palate, with ripe flavors of blueberry and cassis and plenty of espresso scented oak.  But it's not jammy; it's fresh and balanced, and carries its considerable alcohol with grace.  Not a traditional style, but impressive."  96 points!, Wine Spectator

Still just $48.99, this wine continues to offer outstanding value for a wine of this rare caliber.  However, for better or worse, this kind of recognition means that the wine will not be around for long.  We just received a very small shipment, with just a few, final cases coming next month.  If you would like for us to put some aside for you, please give us a call with a credit card number at 703-671-8700.  Of course, quantity discounts apply:  Take 5% off 6 bottles or 15% off a solid case of 12 bottles!

SHERRY TASTING & SEMINAR (Thur, Oct 25, 6:30 pm) -- Want to see the world of wine in a whole different light?  Take a trip to Spain's fascinating Sherry region without leaving home, with THIS THURSDAY'S special tasting and seminar A Fresh Look At Sherry, Thursday, October 25 at 6:30 pmWhy Sherry, why now?  Made in one of the most unique wine regions on earth, Sherry marches to its own distinctive beat, using grapes, grape-growing methods, and winemaking techniques that virtually no one else uses.  As a result, the wines -- and there are a lot of them, nearly a dozen different styles! -- are widely misunderstood and under-appreciated.  Yet, as the weather begins to cool, the intense, often dark, nutty flavors of Sherry, whether sweet or dry, can provide the perfect match to fall's heavier, full-flavored cuisine and seasonal produce, not to mention a good pumpkin pie.  Thursday's seminar introduces you to the unique methods and wines of this historic region.  You'll sample a range of wine styles, receive our colorful handy Sherry cheatsheet, and enjoy the wines as they are meant to be enjoyed -- paired with a selection of piquant Spanish snacks and cheeses.  The seminar will be presented by Certified Wine Educator Suzanne McGrath, who travelled to the region this summer.  To reserve, give us a call at 703-671-8700.

ALL-NEW BORDEAUX FROM THE HISTORIC 2005 VINTAGE (Sat, Oct 20, 1-4 pm) --  Have we mentioned that the incoming wines from the 2005 vintage in Bordeaux are among the best that have been made in the last 50 years?  In case it slipped our minds or you weren't paying attention, we'll say it again:  If you love reds, especially Cabernet or Merlot, 2005 Bordeaux should be on your radar screen.  Sure, we're getting a little bit spoiled.  After stellar vintages in 2000 and 2003, "great", "historic" Bordeaux may seem a little, well, boring.  But rest assured, despite the region's recent hot streak, vintages like 2005 don't come along everyday, and in leaner years, won't you be happy to be sitting on a stash of exemplary Bordeaux, especially if you were asleep at the switch and missed out on 2000?  Whatever you do, don't miss it this time!  Stop by the tasting bar this Saturday from 1-4 pm and sample an exciting lineup of all-new Bordeaux reds -- from St-Emilion, Pauillac, and Margaux -- that just arrived.  With deep colors, gorgeous aromas, ripe vibrant fruit, and Bordeaux's signature nuances, Saturday's selections demonstrate just how classy these wines can be.  Best of all, they range in price from just $13 to $27!  Although a great opportunity to sample and pick up some super Bordeaux at great prices -- and save even more with the tasting bar discount -- Saturday's tasting is but a tease, with lots more 2005 Bordeaux to come, the newest wave of it being showcased at our upcoming Grand Tasting Of 2005 Bordeaux on Thursday, November 8.  Mark your calendar now and watch next week's email for details on that event.  In the meantime, hope to see you this Saturday!

Under-$10 Tasting, Chocolate Seminar & A Hot Tip!

DON'T MISS:  THIS WEDNESDAY'S UNDER-$10 TASTING, A 91-POINT HOT TIP & NEXT TUESDAY'S CHOCOLATE SEMINAR & BOOKSIGNING (Tue, Oct 23, 6 & 7 pm)!

** UNDER-$10 TASTING THIS WEDNESDAY ** (Oct 17, 6-8 pm) -- Do you get excited about finding well-made, characterful wines that still sell for unbelievably low prices?  Then you're going to love THIS Wednesday's special Under-$10Tasting!  While quality wines that sell for less than a 10-spot are getting harder and harder to find in today's economy, some surprising values still exist.  Wednesday's walk-around tasting features some of Cheryl's favorite bargains, including:

  • a super, aromatic white wine value from Argentina
  • a lush, spicy Australian Pinot Gris
  • the last of a 90-Point red from Rioja
  • a rich, inky Monastrell from Jumilla, one of the top bargain regions of Spain
  • a savory red from southern Italy
  • and more!

Even better:  You'll still receive the tasting bar discount on the evening's already excellent bargains, or mix up a case of the wines being tasted and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!  Reservations are not required for this tasting; simply stop by anytime from 6-8 pm!

*   *   *

NOW HERE'S A HOT TIP!   Even with the weather beginning to cool and transitioning to fall, you can still use a delicious, food-friendly white in your back pocket, especially one to pair with seasonal white meat dishes like pork and turkey (it's not too early to start thinking about T-Day), as well as spicy favorites like Thai takeout.  Enter this week's tip:  the 2006 Thorn-Clarke Terra Barossa Riesling.  If the thought of Riesling makes you think sweet, think again!  This one's made in the dry, bracing style that's so typical of Australia's take on the grape, using grapes from Eden Valley, a cool, hilly region that sits just above Barossa Valley and is world-renowned for producing some of Australia's top Rieslings.  The wine also happens to come from the 2006 vintage, a great year noted for white wines with intense, concentrated fruit flavors.

"Bright and lively, with a silky texture against the crisp green apple, lime and mineral flavors, persisting on the tart, generous finish.  91 Points, Wine Spectator

At just $12.99, it also happens to offer outstanding value!  The only bad news is the extremely limited quantity.  There are only 100 cases of this hidden gem coming to the United States, and we have 20 of them.  If you'd like to reserve any of this wine, just give us a call with a credit card number.  Quantity discounts make this an even better buy:  Mention this email and receive a special, 10% email-only discount on 6 bottles, or purchase 12 or more bottles and receive the solid case discount of 15% off!

ON THE TASTING BAR THIS WEEKEND

** IT'S FINALLY FALL! ** (TONIGHT, Fri, Oct 12, 6-8 pm) --  As the temperatures begin to dip, are you breathing a sigh of relief?  If you're in the mood to celebrate the arrival of the fall season, you won't want to miss TONIGHT'S special tasting, "Finally Fall".  This week, Katie and Cheryl are at it again, dreaming up an incredible line-up of exciting pairings that celebrate the flavors of the season.  Why not stop by and sample:

  • the fantastic marriage of zesty German Riesling paired with White Stilton with apple and pear
  • an excellent value Chardonnay from Burgundy paired with Mandarin Pumpkin Marmalade
  • a bold, impressive new red from the Rhone paired with Wensleydale with cranberries
  • a caramelly Tawny-style Port paired with spicy, orange-infused chocolate

Of course, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorite wines, or mix up a case of the wines being sampled and receive a special discount of 15% off!  Hope to see you there!

HOT TIP

Always on the lookout for a HOT TIP?  Keep you eye on the spectacular 2005 vintage of Bordeaux and don't miss out on the 2005 Chateau Malmaison, a wine that's already creating quite a stir!  Although most of the 2005 Bordeaux available to date has been limited to inexpensive wines for everyday drinking, the first wave of better quality wines are just beginning to arrive, with the Chateau Malmaison leading the way.  What an opener!  Always a favorite for both quality and value, this Cabernet-based Bordeaux hails from Moulis, located in Bordeaux's famed Medoc region, just to the northwest of Margaux.  Always highly rated, the 2005 vintage received a stellar review from the Wine Spectator based on barrel samples (hence the score range, rather than a definitive number):

"Aromas of spices, berries and currant follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a long, flavorful finish."  92-94 Points, Wine Spectator.

In keeping with the quality of the 2005 vintage, the wine shows lovely, ripe, rich fruit that makes it extremely tempting for short-term drinking, but has the structure and weight to age beautifully.  With the quality of the vintage driving prices up in 2005, the Malmaison is an excellent value at just $29.99.  But please note:  Although the wine just arrived, quantities are extremely limited and when it's gone, it's gone!  If you'd like to reserve some of this wine, just give us a call with a credit card number at 703-671-8700.  Quantity discounts make this an even better buy:  Mention this email and receive a special, 10% email-only discount on 6 bottles, or purchase 12 or more bottles and receive the solid case discount of 15% off!

FREE IN-STORE SEMINARS

VINTAGE MATTERS (THIS Sat, Oct 13 at 1 pm) --  Did you ever wonder when and how much the particular vintage of a wine matters?  Want to become a pro at navigating vintage?  We still have a few spaces available for THIS Saturday's FREE in-store seminar Vintage Matters, an exploration of the importance of vintage, when it matters, and when it doesn't.  The seminar will feature a tasting of wines from different vintages from 2000 through 2007.  While we taste, we'll discuss:

    • what factors make a vintage good or bad
    • which regions experience particularly good and bad vintages (in other words, regions for which it's most important to consider vintages)
    • the silver lining of the "bad" vintage
    • recent vintages to avoid
    • recent vintages to buy right now!
    • a sneak peek of what's to come from 2007

The wines will be paired with complementary cheeses and other nibbles.  Plus, you'll receive our handy, easy-to-use vintage chart.  And, of course, you'll enjoy the tasting bar discount on all wines being tasted.  As usual, the seminar is FREE, but space is limited, so reservations are required.  To reserve, please give us a call during business hours at 703-671-8700 (no email reservations please!).

SAVE THE DATE FOR UPCOMING EVENTS

**UNDER $10 TASTING** (Wed, Oct 17, 6-8 pm) --  Do you get excited about finding well-made, characterful wines that still sell for unbelievably low prices?  Then you're going to love next Wednesday's special "Under-$10" Tasting!  While quality wines that sell for less than a 10-spot are getting harder and harder to find in today's economy, some surprising values still exist.  Plan to stop by the bar on Wednesday, October 17 and sample a range of diverse wines that are perfect for casual entertaining, backyard BBQ, and Wednesday night dinners at home.  Even better:  You'll still receive the tasting bar discount on the evening's already excellent bargains, or mix up a case of the wines being tasted and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!

FOUR VINES TASTING (Thur, Nov 1, 7 pm)  --  If you're a fan of big, spicy, full-throttle California reds, mark your calendar now to join us Thursday, November 1 for a special tasting of the new releases from Four Vines, far and away among the most popular wines we carry.  Based in Paso Robles, Four Vines is a hip, modern winery that crafts consistently excellent wines using grapes from Napa, Sonoma, Paso, and Amador.  Not surprisingly, given their robust theme, their grapes of choice are Zinfandel, Syrah, and Petite Sirah.  November's special tasting will feature the new vintages of most of the winery's offerings, including:

  • the ever-popular "Naked" (i.e. no oak) Chardonnay
  • a trio of Zinfandels, each with its own unique personality, reflecting grapes grown in different areas
  • heavy hitters and fan favorites like "Loco" (Tempranillo), "Peasant" (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre), and "Heretic" (Petite Sirah)
  • their inky Zinfandel-based Port-style wine

The wines will be presented by a special guest visiting from the winery, and will be paired with a menu of full-flavored fareWatch next week's email for details on location, price, and reservations.

GRAND TASTING OF 2005 BORDEAUX (Thur, Nov 8, 7 pm)  -- Speaking of the stellar vintage of 2005 Bordeaux:  Mark your calendar now to join us Thursday, November 8, for a special, walk-around tasting featuring the first big wave of 2005 Bordeaux that's arriving this month.  If you haven't already heard, like the year 2000, the 2005 vintage in Bordeaux was a year of historic proportions, with near-perfect weather conditions that produced some of the best Bordeaux ever!  Due to the aging process, the wines are released slowly, beginning with basic, short-aged wines, then moving on to higher-quality, longer-aged wines, which are beginning to arrive this month.  The top wines of the vintage won't come out until early next year.  November's tasting is your first chance to check out some serious wines of the vintage, when you'll get the best prices available now, as well as special tasting discounts.  If you're looking for some of the decade's best wines to stash away for cellaring, this is a tasting you won't want to miss!  Watch next week's email for details on location, price, and reservations.

Special Free Tasting Of Argentine Wines Tonight!

DON'T MISS TONIGHT'S SPECIAL TASTING OF SURPRISING NEW WINES FROM ARGENTINA (Thur, Oct 11, 6-8 pm)!

When you think of Argentina, you probably think of Malbec, the bold, full-bodied red that's put the region on the world wine map.  But you may not be thinking of Argentina for sparkling wines -- at least until now.  Yet, the country's unique location in the foothills of the Andes Mountains actually creates some ideal microclimates for growing grapes for sparkling wine in some of the region's cooler, high-altitude vineyards.  Likewise, these cooler sub-climates are also just beginning to prove themselves as great locations for growing Pinot Noir.  The result:  Argentina is beginning to emerge as a much more versatile region.  Want to see what we mean?  Stop by the tasting bar TONIGHT (Thursday, October 11), for a special FREE tasting of surprising new arrivals from Argentina, including a trio of wines from Alma Negra, a new collection developed by Ernesto Catena of the region's famous Catena family.  You'll sample:

  • a lovely, aromatic example of Torrontes, Argentina's most important and unique white grape variety
  • a rich, lightly spicy version of Pinot Noir, a grape that's just beginning to pick up steam in Argentina
  • a pair of brand new sparkling wines made from grapes grown high in the vineyards of the Andes Mountains -- including a sparkling

    rosé made from 100% Malbec!

  • a bold, knockout red made from a blend of Malbec and Bonarda, Argentina's two most important red grapes

The wines will be presented by a special guest visiting from Alma Negra

Of course, you'll also enjoy the tasting bar discount on all your favorites, or mix up a case of the wines being sampled and enjoy a special discount of 15% off!  Reservations are not required for this tasting -- just stop by anytime from 6-8 pm.  Hope to see you there!
